National health insurance here is of course better than the US system, but without a comprehensive private medical insurance plan, a serious illness would still probably bankrupt the average Taiwanese person earning minimum wage and not much savings. Unless of course their families bail them out. My wife has bailed two family members out who burnt through all their savings getting treatment.
