Sorry for my tardiness. I looked for video of the issue a few days ago, and finally gave up. Then today I stumbled upon the clip in the Twitter post linked below while perusing other stuff. The two people (one person in Hong Kong, the other in Taipei) involved in the Bangkok discussion obviously very much knew the difference between the two countries, but I guess someone else or some other folks got (understandably) confused:

I’m guessing that you use the pencil to write what’s on the tape so you don’t confuse it with your other tapes? That’s the only thing I can think of.
I’m in my mid-20s, and my parents have some of those but had already moved on to CDs by the time I was old enough to remember anything.
