The difference is whether you’re considering it as an acronym or as a word. As an acronym it has a hard “G”, but as a word it should be soft, but since both still refer to the same thing there is no conflict, both are correct. :man_shrugging:

Except it is an acronym, not a word. The is why it is written in all caps: GIF.
If it were a word, it would be written as gif, which it is not.

GIF is an acronym and correctly pronounced as GIF the same is gif sounds in “gift”.

It is normally when used as a file extension. :smirk:

That does bring up a good point though, one could argue that discussing the format in general leads to saying it one way, but when referring specifically to files it should be the other way. :ponder:
