A post was split to a new topic: Joke of the Day 2024
Order of Operations Calculator
Type in your sum to see how to solve it step by step
8/2(2+2)
Very interesting! So this is 16, correct?
No
Nope, answer is 1
Per these websites it is 16:

Free Order of Operations (PEMDAS) calculator - solve algebra problems following PEMDAS order step-by-step
Also I asked Google Bard. It said 16.
8/2(2+2)
Very interesting! So this is 16, correct?
Isn’t multiplication and division given the same precedence, and so it’s left to right multiplication or division, isn’t it?
8÷2×4= 16
Per these websites it is 16:
in any math problem you must start by calculating the parentheses first, then the exponents, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction
calculating the parentheses first, then the exponents, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction
Ok let’s do that …
Parentheses first so:
8/2(2+2) becomes 8/2(4)
Exponents: None
Multiplication and division #1 division comes first from left to right:
4(4)
Multiplication and division #2 one remaining multiplication
4(4)
Equals 16
I wish I’d done a couple of math degrees. It looks a lot easier than I thought.
Multiplication and division #1 division comes first from left to right:
4(4)
You still have parentheses, don’t you?
Isn’t it wonderful that Funny Pictures has turned into a math class…
8/2(2+2)
Picture this as a fraction. 8 on top, flat line, 2(2+2) underneath
TaipeiGuy2000:8/2(2+2)
Picture this as a fraction. 8 on top, flat line, 2(2+2) underneath
I can picture it any way you want but what matters is how it is written and thus we need to evaluate it as such.
TaipeiGuy2000:8/2(2+2)
Picture this as a fraction. 8 on top, flat line, 2(2+2) underneath
That would have to be notated 8/[2(2+2)]
And this is just math…no wonder politics is so contentious.
