“Funny religious pictures” would last 24h, so I think this is the most proper thread.

If that isn’t already a book title, it should be.

The 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution simply states that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. Self-defense, including defense of one’s personal property, exists in the US independent of the 2nd Amendment. The right to self-defense would not be taken away if the 2nd Amendment were repealed. However …

During the 1992 LA riots over the LAPD’s beating of Rodney King, the LAPD retreated in order to protect the rich and powerful, leaving the less-rich and the less-powerful to defend themselves as best they could.

If you weren’t rich and powerful in LA in 1992, then sorry buddy - you’re on your own (at least until the National Guard could be mobilized). LAPD were badly outnumbered and were therefore forced to distribute their limited resources in way decided by city government - and as it turned out in a way that favored the rich and the powerful. That’s when the right to bear arms really came in handy.

The 2nd Amendment (in its Constitutional context) also defines all US citizens as members of an ever vigilant citizen militia empowered to check the power of government, with military arms if necessary. If nothing else, Korean-Americans showed the rest of the country just how valuable is the American militia’s civil right to bear arms and the importance of such a militia’s readiness to assume the proper role of government.

Sacramento continues to do its dead-level best to strip Californians of their civil right to bear arms, but they’re probably only another LA riot away from losing that battle forever.

This Nat Geo documentary about the whole thing is pretty good. In my favorite scene (1:24:10), an old Korean lady single-handedly fends off Mexican gangbangers who want to loot and burn her shop. Somebody should have given her a gun.
