Struggling to get my head around this news this morning. For as great and popular a player/coach as Speedy to hang himself really gives you pause. RIP Gary.
Outwardly happy, confident, and successful, a family man with a promising career in management ahead. There is still huge stigma attached to mental illness in the UK, and especially within a “man’s game” like football, and seeking help may have been extremely difficult. I remember when Stan Collymore was roundly mocked for talking about his struggle with depression. After Robert Enke killed himself two years ago German football became a lot more sensitive to the issue, and hopefully something similar will happen in the UK. A damned shame.
My mate said he was on Football Focus the day before he died, talking his usual good sense and appearing totally fine.
So sad and totally unexpected.
