George Pell conviction quashed, to walk free from Barwon Prison in Melbourne

Man, I can’t believe this.

What I don’t understand is the article says that appeal decision has yet to be made. So how has his conviction been quashed and he is walking free?

Your last sentence is basically becaise of the legal mumbo-jumbo that surrounds this. Essentially he will walk free later today when the paperwork gets to the prison.

Catholic Church has lots of donors who pay for expensive lawyers.

True that. It’s a big haves club.

As well, because of the way that the Church is set up, its is extremely difficult for them to be sued, so those affected have to sue the individuals.

Do you think suing the Church would make more sense than suing the individuals?

Yes, when a conviction is quashed you walk free.

Question is how is he walking free, not is he walking free. I don’t get how the conviction has been ‘quashed’ when the appeal decision apparently is yet to be made. But I think this is because I don’t have the legal knowledge, as yinggeaussie said:

Some of the individual offenders are dead, so end of the line for cases against them. Some victims, or relatives of deceased victims, have tried to sue the Church, Christian Brothers, etc, because of their failure to act, but that’s where the organisational structure gets involved.
