I’m a taiwanese canadian and I’m thinking of maybe going back to Taiwan this summer to work as a english teacher. I’ve been here in Canada for more than 14 years. If I decide to go back to get a job for just the summer would it be easy or no because I’m asian (I’ve heard it’s harder no racism intended). Also if it isn’t significantly harder are there positions where it is just for the summer? I’ve also read up on the forum that it is more likely to land a job if your go to cram school and drop off your resume to each one. However, I am located in Canada and unable to do that.

and would appreciate if anyone could help me out.
Also would I be able to land a job if all I have is a high school diploma? I just want to do a summer job in Taiwan so I can visit taiwan during the summer.
I think it would be possible to get a job. A few possible snags: If you are a male, you have the potential issue of military service. Also, you are likely to be hired as a local teacher, which will mean lower pay and higher work load. A further problem is the length of time you intend to be here, although you may be able to teach a summer camp or something along those lines.

There is some discrimination but it’s not insurmountable. There is summer camp work. With regards to the diploma thing, you should have a BA, but if you have a Taiwanese passport then you can avoid any paperwork hassles. Maybe you should try a recruiter. Reach to Teach is considered by many to fairly reasonable. Google them up and see what you think.
To be honest, judging by your written English here, you might have problems getting a job as an English teacher.
I think it is very unlikely you will be able to find work for just a summer. Most places have longer term contracts than that. Also, as someone mentioned before, if you are Taiwanese, it does make it harder in that many places will want to pay you the same pay as a local, which is much lower than that of a “foreign teacher.” Just my

Would I able to get a higher paying job if I am able to speak mandarin fluently? I could also write a bit too. Thanks for the site also I will check on it later.

Ooookay. If you don’t know the difference between ‘local’ and ‘foreign’ aka ‘native speaker’ then you should be happy with whatever gig you get. Check with Hess and and JLS. Not trying to be mean here, just practical.

For the spelling errors, use Firefox! For grammar I don’t know but in a forum, it’s almost spoken English.
You can find a job as a substitute teacher. I am pretty sure. When a foreign teacher wants to see his/her mama there is a way for you to jump in.
The school does not have to sponsor your visa. This is your advantage.
Your English is not.

I know what native speaker is. I just wasn’t sure what a local teacher was actually. Now I know thanks for clearing it up.

I also got a house in Taichung but would Taipei pay significantly higher (subtracting the living cost, etc)? Also where would I find out the jobs available for summer camps?

I’m using firefox atm. Well to be honest I’m not putting much effort in correcting mistakes in my paragraph. I’m just trying to ask some questions while preparing for my function test tomomorrow. As for the subsitute position that is a great idea. How much money would I expect to earn over the summer?
Annoying or not, still be sure to correct your English before sending out your resume.

A few summers ago I got a summer gig in a cram school because its foreign teacher had to leave suddenly. Similar to you, I had just finished my freshman year in university with no credentials to show, but I think the fact that I majored in Education helped. With luck you may be able to find something temporary, but it is definately a lot more difficult for a non-Westerner to land a decent English teaching job, and you will be looking at some kind of a cut in pay. Stay positive though, and try to apply to as many camps you can!
Oh! and if what you really want to do is visit Taiwan, you can check out camps for Overseas Taiwanese run/sponsored by the government. I went to one of those awhile back and it was an experience of a life time!
Related to summer camp jobs, my contract ends at the end of March(maybe sooner). What will my options at that time? How long will it likely take to find a job? I’m looking for a job in near Danshui.
