Global Taiwan Institute Report on Economic Policymaking in Taiwan

I know everyone is talking about the virus right now, and the author’s name sounds fake, but I found this article informative.

What it it found was basically this: Under the KMT’s one-party rule, all economic policymaking was done by technocrats.

Nothing changed after democratization. LFY members basically only propose legislation with local impact and avoid large-scale national projects. That’s the quickest way to re-election.

[Taiwan doesn’t have a bicameral legislature like the U.S., where senators are elected only one every six years, and they’re more focused on the long term (which is evident in their more immigration-friendly policies).]

Experts bring policies to the executive. The executive brings the policies before members of the party, that includes mayors and MLFY, who seldom object.
