I wouldn’t be surprised. During my trip to Fuzhou in 2018 I was nearly mowed down many times by silent electric scooters. I assume gas-powered ones are illegal in that city because I didn’t see any my whole trip. The problem wasn’t the scooters, but the fact that so many people drove them on the sidewalks, seemingly without a care in the world.
Imagine if they had to pay all of that money back…
In addition, former employees have tipped off the Ministry of Economic Affairs about Gorogo’s alleged subsidy fraud, Business Today reported on Wednesday.
Gogoro has allegedly been using Chinese engines and key parts to reduce manufacturing costs, despite reporting to the ministry that it was using locally made parts to get government subsidies, it said.
Gogoro has received more than NT$600 million (US$18.75 million) in subsidies by allegedly faking domestic key components, the report said.
Apples and oranges, Gogoro is not a utility company. The regulations are completely different.
The HSR is owned by the government so they can pump as much money into it as they want. This is the will of the people, decided by an elected parliament. Gogoro is a public company listed on the stock market owned by thousands of shareholders. If you want Gogoro to be treated like HSR the government would need to spend tax dollars to buy them. Maybe you can start a petition.
Gogoro’s current market cap is $155 million USD. I think the money could be better spent elsewhere.
Seeing how their battery station appears at gas stations (which is government owned), gogoro might as well be utility, and as such should be considered for nationalization.
I don’t even own a Gogoro. Maybe Gogoro customers could do that though , might not be a bad idea but Gogoro and it’s assets actually consitutute a valuable company it’s just determining what value and who will buy it to extract that value.
As I said it’s not good for current shareholders who sunk a huge amount of investment in it but could be good for future shareholders.
155 million market cap , that’s peanuts for Taiwan government honestly but I don’t see any way they would buy it directly, they would probably back a merger or acquisition from another Taiwanese company though using state owned banks.
Their cash balance at the end of 2023 was $170 million, so the rest of the company is valued at zero currently, more or less, their market cap equals their cash. If it is such a bargain, why has no one stepped up to buy it?
Maybe somebody is waiting for it to become even more of a bargain.
If the government really believes having electric scooters is a matter of national importance then they should give money to a couple of smart folks at Taida to design one, build a factory and put battery swap or charging stations on every 中油 gas station property. Would probably still be cheaper and less hassle than nationalizing Gogoro.
More details on the Gogoro fraud case. They were using controllers manufactured in China in VIVA scooters, while using incorrect part numbers and receipts from a local shell company to hide the source.
Also the new JEGO line might also be affected; major components of its motors were made in China. Gogoro did a suspicious recall and motor swap on recently sold (i.e. not yet subsidized) JEGOs under the pretense of “water protection”, but rumors are they’re swapping the Chinese-made motors for Taiwanese ones.
This reminds me… I know for sure they did manufacture at least some controller boards in Taiwan a few years a go. Happened to see their stuff while inspecting a taoyuan area electronics assembly factory (some smaller EMS).
Some parts were made in China , usually there’s a percentage of parts that need to come from a given country to be considered made there. It all depends on the details . If 100% of the scooter was to come from Taiwan that would be a tall order.
To qualify for subsidies, “key components” must be produced in Taiwan. These include the vehicle’s controller and motor.
Note “produced” doesn’t mean manufactured - a component’s parts can be manufactured abroad and then assembled here to quality as “Made in Taiwan”. Problem in this case is that the VIVA controller was entirely made and assembled in China, so Gogoro used the part number of a Taiwan-made controller when applying for subsidies from the government. Certainly looks like intentional deception.
Not many details in that article. Something something the CEO is arrogant. Yeah tell me where can we find a humble CEO?
They mention subsidies to Gogoro but what about subsidies to kymco and Sym…they also got a lot of subsidies. Needs balance.
Also they seem to try and blame it one guy who isn’t the owner and already resigned …convenient isn’t it.
