Dallas, the bit about putting her down will not get you any support.

The dog’s name is Oprah. She’s roughly one and a half years old, with cute spotted socks on all four feet. About 20kg methinks. As Dallas said, she’s had her shots, and only goes to the bathroom outside of the house.

She seems like a sweet, happy, active dog.

I don’t think Dallas is going to put her down anymore. He’s planning to leave her in the park they go to if she cannot be homed. But a life as a stray is not much better in Taiwan.

Regardless of the attitude and irresponsibility of their owners, all cats and dogs deserve a loving home. It really isn’t their fault they are being abandoned…

Wish we could take her in, but we’re already overflowing with animals that don’t have someone watching out for them.

I gave happydallas the number for the shelter in Bali that will take care of the dog for life for a one-off payment. Hope he had some success there.

Sean

He said he couldn’t afford to send her there and he didn’t want to bring her back since he couldn’t take care of her himself.

I put her info up on an adoption website. Hopefully someone will want her.

If not, I guess the only thing left to do would be to convince him to spay her before she is left out on the street. About how much does spaying cost, and who’s a good vet to go to for that?

Is it really better to put the poor dog on the street for life-long suffering :astonished: , than putting it down?

What is the least of two evils here???

That’s really what I’m wondering too.

I would never support dumping a pet on the street. We catch strays, treat, vaccinate, neuter, and return them, but that is completely different. That is the only chance those dogs, as a group, have. We’ll be working with the government to see if the returned dogs can be left be. This particular dog has someone responsible for her future; the strays do not.

I understand happydallas is in a difficult position, but so far his choices have been irresponsible. Killing the dog or dumping it would not improve his situation any.

The shelter in Bali will take care of a dog for the rest of its life for between ten thousand and twenty thousand NTD - not a whole lot more than it would have cost to take it back to the U.S., which happydallas would have done, apparently, if he weren’t sick and unable to care for it properly. The Bali shelter is also a charity, so they may help happydallas out a little.

What was the result of the phone call to the shelter? I offered to transport the dog there for free.

Sean

He said he could not afford to send the dog there

Did he call? Did someone call for him?

Sean, maybe you can write up some pretty words encouraging people to help out by donating money and time, and to NOT adopt strays when they plan to be in Taiwan for just a short time, and have no plans to take the animals back home.

Some people grab a pathetic looking dog, and have no idea how difficult it is here to place the dog in a good caring home.

Taiwan is NOT like your home country.

Not being a jerk,

jds

You’re not being a jerk at all; I agree with you. I am writing up something similar for our Web site, and it will be essential reading for all potential adopters.

Once again, I understand that happydallas is having to make some quick decisions here and has his own health to worry about. I just hope he can find it within himself to find a solution that works for his dog.

Our pets look to us to care for them; treated well, a dog will never abandon its human companion. We owe it to our pets to do do the best thing we can by them, even when circumstances are so difficult that we are not really sure how.

If he can put this dog in the shelter, I will actively seek a responsible adopter for her - a permanent, caring home. This is a living sentient being we are talking about, happydallas, not a piece of furniture.

There already seems to be one tragedy here; we don’t need to create another.

Respectfully,

Sean

I spoke to him yesterday when I took pictures of her, and that was what he said.

I know he does not seem very willing to take responsibility for his dog but…she’s a dog.

And she’s a fairly healthy, young dog. I would not want to see her murdered…

OK, I am not going to be very popular here.

If the only two options is to either dump the dog on the streets, or to let a veterinarian end its life, I would think the most humane would be to have it put down. We don’t need more stray dogs.

Let the flamewar begin!!

is it just me, or does the OP seem to have been edited somewhat?

Dallas edited after he saw straydog’s comment. I wonder if he saw all the other ones. Hehe.

But hey, anyhow, he found a home for the dog!

His friend found a lady with a farm in Hsinchu that took her!
I’m so happy.

Farm!

Ill person,
I feel for your story because the same thing happen to my aunt for she have an unlucky dog with the white feet also. She was hit by a car. But take heed, for she did not give up her beloved dog. Did she? No. She bought lucky cat to balance fate, and now she walks again.

 :bravo: :notworthy:

I too have an unlucky dog, Xiao Tchoe looks just like Opera, cept her ears aren’t straight, they bend about 3/4 of the way up. Anyway other than causing some financial burdens she doesn’t seem to have caused any bad luck. Also I know lots of people who have had some crappy times and don’t have any animals of any kind. Still, way to go to your grandmother :bravo: it must be hard to keep a bad luck dog with society against you and being Taiwanese.

A dog was almost killed or thrown out simply because no one would take it under cheap superstitions. Its not that uncommon to have animals with 2 or 4 white “socks”.

I’m very annoyed at these stupid Chinese superstitions. Very very annoyed.

First, many believe that Diarreah is a good thing (#1 cause of death in the world).

Then I remember a Wired article a while back about all these Australians making a bundle off Hong Kong people due to their superstitions at the racetrack.

Third, my building doesn’t have any offices labeled 204, 304, 504, etc…

I suppose if I was born on 4/04 at 4:44 then I should probably be killed outright.

They should follow the tradition entirely, or cease to follow it at all.
