Good restaurants in donghu?

I am moving to Donghu with my girlfriend next month. Are there any notable restaurants, or food stands anyone likes?

There’s Alleycats and that Thai/home-made beer place, Jolly something. At the end of [Mingchuan] East Road.

*Edited. Thanks to BigJohn.

There’s also a pretty good seafood resto / beerhouse on Kangning Road next to the China Oil gas station. Behind that, there’s a slightly diagonal lane that has a very unpretentious but delicious spaghetti joint called “The Four Sisters”. Try the pesto chicken!! Swensen’s on the big corner (near Jolly and Alleycat’s) has pretty good club sandwiches.
By the way,
There’s Alleycats and that Thai/home-made beer place, Jolly something. At the end of Minsheng East Road.
That’s at the end of Minchaun E Rd, not Minsheng.
About 50 meters west on Minchaun from Swensen’s there’s a really great jiang mu ya (ginger duck hotpot) place that gets insanely crowded from 6.30 to 9pm.

Thanks. I will look out for 4 sisters. Jolly is very good, but pretty expensive for me. I coudl see myself eating there a couple times a year at best. But I must say Jolly makes some INCREDIBLE tasting BBQ lamb chops. They aren’t cheap but some of the tastiest lamb I have ever eaten.

Yeah, and they only have crappy, low stools to sit on, but you can get it for take-out. No English spoken there, if I recall. I’m not sure whether that’ll be a problem for the OP.

Let’s see, you already know about Zhou1 Pang4zi3 dumplings at the intersection of Kangning and Donghu Rd.

Then between Swenson’s and the gas sta., there’s also a small Thai place. Not bad.
EDIT: I grabbed a namecard today: it’s Section 3, #54-6, and it’s actually past the gas station (between the gas station and Hala).

For cheaper eats, there’s a good beef noodles place opposite Donghu Elementary (Dong1hu2 guo2xiao3) on Donghu Rd… And halfway between the school and Hala (the castle-like movie theater complex at Kangning and Donghu Rd.), on the school side, is a small stand selling decent sushi.

Or from Hala head onto Donghu Rd., past the school to the next main light or so (I tend to forget about small lights), and then veer left as it becomes Kangle Ave.; you’ll pass the post office on your left (you’ll need to know that’s there). Continue on Kangle Ave to the next signal intersection or until you see an 85C cake shop on the left, and meat and ducks hanging in a window on the right side of the intersection. That’s a cheap, reliable Cantonese biandang joint where you can get duck for NT$80 or so (EDIT-- found a cockroach in a biandang from that place tonight! :hungry: – 3/27/2009; followup EDIT: Apr.3, got a call from the Health Bureau, which raided the place after my phoned-in complaint. They found multiple code violations, issued orders to fix them and will do a follow-up inspection.). Turn left there, go 65 meters or so, and there’s a lady doing nice broiled Japanese-style chicken, also cheap, although a tad slow. Keep going until you hit the rear corner of Donghu Elementary, turn left (heading back toward Donghu Rd.) and there’s a long string of stalls on the left to try; I like the first one that has fried mutton rice and beef fried rice. You can also get to this street by heading from Hala down Donghu Rd. and turning left in the first alley after the school.

A little farther, but worth knowing about:
If you go north on Kangning, after you hit Minquan (where Alleycat’s and Jolly are) it becomes Jin1hu2, I think. Follow that almost to Neihu Rd, i.e., just past a semi-circular, temporary detour at the moment (can’t miss it), on the left is a small re4chao3 熱炒 place that does stir fries to order, with decent seafood, and it has a lot of dishes for only NT$100, and some for a bit more. You can feed two nicely for $450 or so, on, say, garlic and basil clams, kung pao shrimp, stir fry beef, veggies, and rice.

And if you’re living in Donghu you’ll also want to learn how to get to a good, inexpensive Vietnamese restaurant not TOO far away, in Xizhi. If you’re on a scooter I could show you the way quite quickly, but essentially where Donghu Rd. turns into Kangle, you turn right (not steep right before the light, but 90 degreed right, at the light itself) instead. That takes you immediately past a Formosa (?) gas sta. on your right. Keep going to the end and veer left, then follow under the highway to the end, turning left there, where you pass a CPC gas sta, and after one or two hundred meters there’s a big Vietnamese restaurant, set back a bit from the road. Go in nice weather, and ask for the patio seats outside, to avoid the noise of the crowds.

That is an awesome restaurant. I try to go there at least once a week. :lick:

If you want pizza, Alleycat’s there is the best, but you might want places that deliver sometime.

Pizza Slut sucks, IMO, but you might disagree. There’s one right by Hala. There’s a Domino’s on Kangle Ave, about another 200 yds or more past the Cantonese place. And also nearby but not IN Donghu, there’s a Napoli’s pizza in Nangang. Take Kangning south past Donghu Rd. After going over the bridge, go left at the Y, which is Jing1mao4 er4lu4 經貿二路. Turn right before you hit the RR tracks and before Zhong1xiao4 E. Rd… Go a short way, about 2 intersections, and on your left at #145 is Napoli’s, or you can order out; call 2783-9922.

I hardly ever set foot in Donghu due to the long distance, but I suppose that’ll change once the MRT Neihu line opens this summer. The line does go all the way to Donghu, right?

Yeah.

Isn’t Pan’s Garden in that neck of the woods too? probably not for an everyday meal.

Oh, right! It’s not ‘cheap eats’, but – to get to Pan’s Garden, while heading from Swenson’s toward Hala on Kangning, turn left halfway, just at the CPC gas station. This will take you past the public TV station on the right, and Kangning Nursing School on the left, then on up hill, past nice, wealthy homes, over the top, downhill, and as you’re nearing the bottom there’s a single, very tall building on your right that sticks out like a sore thumb. Pan’s Garden is there, on 2F.

From Donghu Rd., as you’re going from Hala to Donghu Elementary, turn left JUST before the school, and then go straight, past the school, past 7-11 on your right, and another 400 yds or more, until you see Pan’s Garden on your left.

AND:

If you want Peking Duck, there’s a small truck that moves around selling it. It can often be found next to the Donghu Junior High School, which is even further on down Kangle Av. from the other places I mentioned. Across from and just past the Jr. High is Donghu’s second Wellcome supermarket, and the ‘duck truck’ is also sometimes found parked in the alley just past the super.

There’s a couple of good ones on Donghu Rd. lane 94. Opposite side of Dong hu elementry school. A decent dumpling and noodle shop (maybe dragon bones talked about this one, dza jang mien is great here), and on the corner almost opposite it, a great Bejing style resturant with dim sum. The Ribs are highly recommended, and reasonable price, about 500ish for 2.

On Dong Hu Rd lane 119, same side as the elementry school (or Dragon bones was talking about this one, dumplings are the best I had anywhere ) Fantastic dumplings and great side dishes. A bit further up the same alley is a cafe that has set meals and has an English menu. The Bejing duck take away from a truck I normally see right at the end of this alley.

I was going to recommend “Black” from the Shintori group but if you think Jolly is expensive, oh well…

Well, I guess I should have clarified my price range. Jolly is pricey for me. I can’t remember what me and my gf spent there but I think it was around $45 USD or something. The beers are OUTRAGEOUSLY over priced in my opinion.

Not to say the meal wasn’t excellent. But I guess I am looking for more everyday dining. I mean right now if I go out to a few night market stands I can eat an excellent meal for like $120 NT. Last night I ate some Japanese pork curry that was restaurant quality at a night market stand here in Neihu. I have already mentioned the grill stand I found. It has EXCELLENT quality meat, and is very reasonable. I would think that if it was in a restaurant it would be quite expensive for the quality of meat that it uses. Melt in your mouth steak kabobs, great pork, chicken, seafood, veggies, lamb…

the beer at Jolly’s is amazingly cheap, not expensive, unless you’re comparing it to take away Taiwan beer from 7-11. It’s even bette when you realise how good it is.

Expensive beers are 300 bucks for a can of Carlsberg, etc, which you can find at so many places its’s become accepted. Now THAT’S a rip-off.

Hmmn, maybe I don’t remember correctly. I remember the beer I had wasn’t good but I got it cuz of the alc content. It was a scotch ale. Very sweet tasting. I am sure they probably have other beers I would like.

How much is a pint at Jolly, you recall? I am willing to pay around $150 NT for a pint. But yeah I would never spend $300, thats more expensive than Manhattan…

Dude, your ceiling for a pint of beer is less than 4 and a half bucks US???

Go out much where you come from, do you???

Yeah, but that is a normal price where I come from if you go to a Microbrewery. I wouldn’t pay more than $5 USD, thats preposterous. I lived in a bar district before in a suburb outside of Detroit called Royal Oak. It had like 30 bars in a square mile or something. Anyways, yeah nobody would pay more than $5 for a beer, and that area isn’t poor. When I was Manhattan the microbrewery near Time Square (which wasn’t very good), was $6 a beer. I think that is silly, but I paid it because I wanted to try it. But in the US maybe we aren’t used to paying as much for stuff. I take it your a Brit or European or something?

maybe you should stick to the taiwan brewery beer garden: cheapest beer in taiwan.

I am new here relatively, where is this place?

I would definately like to try some beers here. Any kind of beer garden is a comfortable place for me.

But yeah paying more than $5 per pint is preposterous. I mean unless you live in Manhattan or something. But maybe saying that is a small price to pay for a beer is a status thing here to show off how much money you make indirectly. Dunno.
