Google Android phones, now 4 to choose from here

Saw the G2 (magic) and G3 (hero) at the HTC store today, and the G4 at the Samsung store, in stock and for sale. The G3 and G4 seem pretty great, with nice cameras and screens (OLED on the G4). But, somewhat expensive, about $600. I think CHT sells some of these with a plan (anyone got pricing details) but you pay one way or another. The G2 seems redundant by comparison. Actually the G1 isn’t sold here, but a used T-mobile G1 from the USA for $200 seems like the best bang for the buck (plus $13 for the unlock code). The Google Map application runs native and works great. I suppose the iPhone 3GS should be on sale here now too (from CHT, not the Apple store).

I was considering of buying an Android phone too, but the looks of these phones are just ass ugly.

Right now, my top choice would be the HTC Touch Pro 2.

Funny, I think all the current production HTC Android devices look better than the Touch Pro 2. If I had my pick of what shell I wanted Android in, i’d go with the Touch Diamond 2.

I will have the HTC hero with Android soon. It is not “ass ugly”, you should take a look in zhonghua store. I prefere HTC hero and Magic than the Touch Pro 2.

I don’t like the over-simplistic styling of the buttons, and also how the bottom of the phone bends a bit outwards.

I think other HTC’s look sexy though :stuck_out_tongue:

 I like the simple, clean styling of the buttons, and imo the “chin” gives HTC Dream and HTC Hero a bit of stylistic differentiation in a world already overflowing with brick-ish devices. However, if you prefer gaudy, flashy buttons and no chin, i’m sure Motorola, Huawei, Sony Ericsson, and probably even HTC sooner or later will satisfy your needs.

By the way, just some minor corrections for the original post. The HTC Magic and HTC Hero are not (officially or otherwise) called the G2 and G3. The branding G1 is not the identity of the device worldwide, just its branding when resold by T-Mobile in the US and parts of Europe. Also, while the phones run Android, they are not all Google phones. The HTC Hero is not sold anywhere as a “Google Experience” phone, whereas the HTC Dream and HTC Magic are sold both as “Google Experience” and HTC branded phones. The latter feature less Google-centric customizations.

Point taken. Though, if you search on eBay you’ll find some otherwise use of the term G2. Just trying to find a convenient way to refer to the first, second, third and fourth Android phones, though I suppose it will run out of steam when we get to 20 by the end of the year. A search for G2 on eBay will also reveal some Sciphone and other PRC Android knockoffs… in fact Dell is going to be selling one there. Though some of them (including the Dell) lack both 3G and wifi and maybe even lack GPS. And I’m not sure I trust those Sciphones to do anything more than look like an iPhone or a gPhone on the outside, seems sketchy as to whether they actually run the real OS.

I like the HTC magic. Its look is a little similar to the HTC touch.

Now that I tried the iPhone OS 3.0 and that I heard of the Android OS, I feel Windows mobile on my HTC Touch feels very much like a thing from another age.

Nevermind! I take back my comment about the HTC Android phones, specifically the HTC Hero. I picked up one and played around with it, and boy, am I wrong about the styling.

It looks wicked! I love the dark color with metal trimmings on the side.

Oh nice, I was really turned off by Android initially after seeing T-Mobile’s G1. It’s nice to see that there are now more official choices available, other than having to shoehorn Android onto WM phones.

Now if somebody would be able to wipe that godawful BlackBerry OS off the Storm, I’d be interested in getting an Android phone to play with. As much as I love Blackberries, the OS really is meant to be used with physical keys.

I got a Samsung Galaxy i7500.

Not bad as a cellphone, but boy, does the Samsung support sucks!!! The software that comes with the cellphone doesn’t even work (always says unsupported device). No software updates whatsoever in this side of the planet (although in other countries they are already officialy launched), and even if there were updates, without the software you need to resort to violence (read using unofficial means) to update. I guess both Taiwan Mobile and Samsung Taiwan must be too busy to even bother with supporting us…

Physical keys can be a good thing. Like for instance, playing some nethack on the go…
