Google Chrome Browser

Anyone else tried it?

I installed it earlier, and it’s quite slick to load pages. Quite a different browser concept, but perhaps like gmail it will be something that I was unsure about at first, but soon enough loved.

I ran it for a week, and then went back to Firefox. Yeah, Chrome loaded better, but I like the Firefox format better.

I use it most of the time now, because it’s quick to launch and because I can search directly from the address bar. I also like the fact that when you right-click to paste something into the address bar, the context menu has the “paste and go” or “paste and search” option. I still use Firefox when I want to bookmark stuff (because Foxmarks keeps bookmarks synced across both my home computers), or when I want to do stuff on my site using the Firebug, Web Developer, and FireFTP add-ons.

There’s another thread about Google Chrome here.

Yeah! I tried it… but it won’t run on my PC… not running sp2. Why?

I know that things change but FF and Opera both run fine.

Opera had this function for a while, by typing a character in front of the search term, e.g. “g ______” searches on Google, “y _______” on Yahoo, “w ________” on Wikipedia and so on. You can define the prefix yourself in the settings.
Nowadays Opera has an additional field beside the address bar where you can type the search term with your preferred search engine pre-selected, or click the drop down menu to select another. The search via the address bar still works as described, too.

Firefox is good and I tried it for a while, but I still find myself going back to Opera.

I remember that, like Chrome, it also has that “paste and go” option when you right-click in the address bar. But the reason I’m mostly using Chrome now is that it’s quick and very simple. There isn’t a separate search field; you just search from the address bar (the default is Google, but you can choose from a list of others or add your own).

I use Chrome exclusively now… Fast, stable and does everything I need… I particularly like the “paste and go” as Joesax said and also the “highlight any text and right click to Google it in a anew window” functions…

sp2 for xp is a requirement

Google has openly admitted that chrome tracks your browsing and keeps records on google’s own site. Google is becoming Ogle, as in snooping at your private business.

I have used Opera since version 3 (paid for it too) and only resort to Firefox on sites with unfriendly and badly written java and javascripts.

For those looking for a good alternative to the three most common, try K-Meleon. It’s handles Flash, Java and Javascript, yet is small enough to function well in 32MB of RAM on a 486 using Windows 95. I’m not kidding. It also seems to manage memory better than most, thus is rarely crashes.

I hear what you are saying, but at least they tell you, and their only real benefit is commercial for selling the stats and targeting ads.
What about governments that do the same at server level? That already happens, so I don’t care about commercial tracking. Google does it to track trends and stats, so they are interested in the habits of the masses, where as Govts do it for the opposite reason to have the ability to drill into a specific person’s business.

I struggle to think what would be of concern about tracking the average person’s browsing. It would typically be a bit of news, a forum or two, some banking, some youtube, some wiki, some porn perhaps and general googling for things. Collectively across the masses it’s valuable commercial info, but individually it’s pretty much worthless unless crimes are being committed.

I’d be more worried about the ability of authorities to triangulate GSM usage and build a complete history of where a person physically goes and when, assuming their phone is always on. That’s scarier than internet usage.

Yeah but Chrome shows pictures of your last few sites on the screen - not great when you’ve been browsing porn at home and then log on in the office!

I tried it. I liked it as a quick alternative to Firefox (which has become awfully slow to load of late). But then it stopped working. I click on the icon, and it refuses to load. :idunno:

I think MIcrosoft sabotages everything that comes along. FIrefox, SAfari and also maybe Chrome too. Im using it (chrome) as of today and so far so good

I think Google released the fist official (non beta) version of Chrome in the last couple of days, 1.01 or something… perhaps users still on the beta version will need to do a manual update to keep Chrome working smoothly… Evidently this new version is even faster, handles plugins better and is less prone to crashing…

[quote]Sundar Pichai, vice president of product development, told me that this release of Chrome will have “tons and tons of bug fixes,” especially around audio and video playback, which should now be “more stable.” Chrome will also be faster. Pichai said Google’s browser is 1.4 to 1.5 times faster (depending on which benchmarks you use) than it was at launch.

As for Chrome logging what you type into the search bar, that’s nothing that Google and IE doesn’t do already, and as Truant pointed out it’s pretty innocuous information anyway…

the only problem i’ve had so far is with hotmail. I can’t reply to e-mails when i use Chrome. Weird but it could be a Microsoft sabotage

Generally Im liking chrome because you can just type in a few letters in the main line whereas other browsers you have to type in exactly or else you dont get to the site and no suggestions of correct ones too.

However, and this must be microsoft again, it wont work with hotmail. It wont let you reply to an email in hotmail.

The other thing it doesnt do is it doesnt allow you to send a link or the webpage itself using your email client (outlook express, thunderbird).

Also , yes too much info is displayed bout your browsing history. One has to delete the history .

For some (stupid) reason Facebook does not allow playing Youtube videos in Facebook (sharing a YT video you’ll just get a link back to Youtube, which I don’t understand, does Facebook not want users to stay on their platform?)

I just found a Google Chrome add-on that allows you to watch Youtube videos inside Facebook. If you are interested, it’s here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mts-play-youtube-inside-f/mbnofkhnoflaknikohfaedmdaiafohpg

Not a big deal, but whatever makes life easier!

There is also a similar thing for Reddit. (all kind of embedded media not YouTube specific + dark mode )

Facebook on Chrome acts weirdly today. Anyone else experiencing this? Images and videos not showing. Firefox is fine.

did not experience this. are you on mobile or desktop?
