GOP's Nugent event somehow misses the mark

Did Ted Nugent somehow miss the whole “macaca” thing? Guy shows up at a GOP-sponsored black-tie gubernatorial inauguration party in Texas wearing a Confederate-flag outfit, yelling his head off about people who don’t speak English. Guess he forgot it wasn’t a Klan meeting, although given how hard the Republicans work to block blacks from voting I can understand the mixup.

Hey, I’m all in favor of free speech and understand that there’s broad latitude for “offensive” speech, but this is a private GOP event. You would think that they’d use a little judgment – he’s not the “motor city madman” for nothing.
Perry’s spokesman, Robert Black, downplayed the Tuesday-night incident.

‘‘Ted Nugent is a good friend of the governor’s. He asked him if he would play at the inaugural. He didn’t put any stipulation of what he would play,’’ Black said.
At least one GOP strategist realizes that this is hurting the party:

But it appears all the rest of the GOPpers present were eating it all up:
Nugent seemed out of place as the men in tuxedos and women in evening gowns pressed in to see him. He came out waving an American flag and wearing a ripped confederate flag shirt – with a stars-and-stripes guitar, a 50-millimeter machine gun onstage, as well as a skull with an American Indian headdress.

Nugent saluted Perry and those serving in the U.S. armed forces – and at one point he delivered a wild guitar solo and at the climax screeched the name “George W. Bush!” to the applauding crowd.
50-millimeter? WTF… guess the 2nd Amendment crowd got a hard-on over that.

This wouldn’t be the first time he’s done the whole Confederate-flag-screw-those-with-bad-English thing, so my sense is that Perry knew exactly what was on the show. In a news piece from Nugent’s own official site dating from 2005:

No I’d say that hit the mark. What did they expect when they invited Ted Nugent?

Well, guys like Nugent allow those folks to assuage their consciences in maintaining that it is WE and not THEY who are somehow “the elites”, even as they hold their tux-and-tails suarets (sp?) at the castles of oil tycoons.

Nugent is a perfect bridge between the actual clientelle of the Republican Party and their hickville voting base, who let themselves be bribed by the party’s position on gun rights and pretensious stance on religious issues into pretending the GOP actually stands for keeping the government off the back of the little guy and all that.

I say he’s a bridge because he’s both A) a redneck and B) rich.

And if someone’s going to call me on my lack of “tolerance”, I’ll fire back that I’m a ‘pre-cultural relativism’ liberal. IE, LIBERALISM MEANS STANDING FOR LIBERTY. And to have liberty, we must tolerate everything EXCEPT intolerance. And not tolerating intolerance basically equates to not tolerating rednecks!

My opinion is entirely without merit.

However, I would like to add that T-Nuge is awesome becuz of what he did when he was in Damn Yankees:

Damn Yankees toured on the heels of the first Persian Gulf War, which Nugent endorsed by shooting flaming arrows at Saddam Hussein in effigy. Several police complaints and at least one arrest resulted from Nugent’s actions. Nevertheless, they were a top concert attraction in the early '90s. Another Damn Yankees release, 1992’s Don’t Tread, was unable to sustain similar momentum.

Did you get that?

which Nugent endorsed by shooting flaming arrows at Saddam Hussein in effigy.

You missed it? sorry

shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows shooting flaming arrows

it should be clear at this point.

Note: “flaming arrows” are “arrows that have been set on fire”

Nugent has adopted the Confederate flag as an emblem he likes to wear at all his concerts. Just curious whether there was a stack of kerosine-soaked crosses sitting behind the Saddam effigy.

Maybe the confederate flag is just a reference to his sincere love for the Dukes of Hazzard.

Well, he could show his strong independent streak without offending so many people if he would then just wear “Daisy Dukes” on stage instead of the Confederate flag outfits.

To quote Paul Harvey…And now, the rest of the story
Nugent insists Perry loved show
Aide admits the governor may not agree with rebel rocker’s attire
By LISA SANDBERG, Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle Austin Bureau

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry to rocker Ted Nugent: “Give 'em hell.”

Nugent insisted Monday that the governor loved his inaugural ball performance last week and never criticized
his decision to wear a shirt emblazoned with the Confederate battle flag.

In a telephone interview Monday, he said Perry approached him backstage after the Jan. 16 event, complimented
him on “the greatest rock and roll” and thanked him for coming.

The governor followed that up with a weekend telephone call that ended with Perry telling Nugent to “give 'em hell,” Nugent said.

Nugent, who disputed news accounts that he made disparaging remarks about immigrants during his inaugural appearance,
said he often wears his battle flag shirt on stage during concerts. “It’s cute,” he said. “It’s a rebel flag and I’m a rebel.”

Perry’s decision to invite Nugent turned what might have been a simple Austin celebration into a national news item.
Nugent’s appearance in rebel attire, with machine guns for props, came just hours after Perry delivered an inaugural
speech noted for its moderate, conciliatory tone.

Perry’s chief spokesman, Robert Black, said he had no reason to dispute Nugent’s statement that the governor congratulated
the rocker on his performance. “The governor is very good friends with Ted Nugent,” Black said.

He said that while Perry wouldn’t have advocated Nugent’s choice of attire, he defended the appearance on freedom of expression
grounds.

When asked if Perry, who won re-election to his second full term with 39 percent of the vote, would have invited Nugent had he
known what he would wear, Black responded, “Yes.”
“If you’re going to defend freedom of expression, then you’re going to have to defend all freedom of expression,” Black said.

"Kill it and grill it, baby!

The photo was done nicely to try to minimize the Confederate flag while emphasizing more standard American flags. Naturally the photo does not show his ranting demands for immigrants with less-than-perfect English to get out. I still think that if he wore a pair of “daisy dukes” instead of “david dukes” on stage, he’d be able to demonstrate his independent mind without offending large segments of the population.

Now, nobody’s complaining that Ted “Get Rid of Mexicans But Bring Back Slavery” Nugent can’t say or do whatever he wants. I just think it’s interesting that the GOP knows exactly what he’s going to do onstage and they condone it and support it – in the crowd they absolutely eat it up. They know he says stuff about hispanics on stage and they know he loves to wear a symbol of the slaveholding states.

If Republicans want to take their party back from the white-hood crowd, then it’s time to stand up and be counted. Lincoln must be spinning in his grave!
