I finally got my cellphone and a contract with Chunghwa. I can do WAP and email with the phone, no problem. Now I want to connect my Palm via Bluetooth to the phone, to be able to browse Forumosa on the bus. I got both of them talking, but the phone disconnects upon sign up. So I guess there are some parameters not setup correctly. Does anybody have any experiences and could point me in the right direction? I would read the manual, but my biological dictionary is missing a couple of these chinese characters.
Well, I have that K700i, but the dialing code for GPRS, the login info for the Chungwa GPRS etc. should be the same on any phone. I created a new GPRS account on the phone. I also used the one I got via SMS. GPRS works when I use the phone browser and mail client.
I created a network connection on my Palm, but I think I am not using the correct login info there. I don’t know the exact user name, there is also another string that needs to be send, at least according to an example that I found online, unfortunately not for Chunghwa. In this example the string “internet” is send, I tried “emome”. I found the dialing code here on forumosa in some other post. My Palm is connecting to my phone fine, the phone indicates the incoming connection, but when the Palm is trying to sign in, the phone disconnects, and I get a timeout on the Palm.
I hope someone can give me good tips. Maybe someone can send me their settings. Does anybody use the Palm for Chunghwa GPRS?

I have my Palm hooked up through Taiwan Dageda. Contact them (Chunghwa of course) and ask for the settings for your Palm. What I eventually had to do was go to a main office, talk to a tech and get someone to fax them the setup instructions (which was for an old Palm 3, but still helpful).
I’ll put up the complete setup instructions for 台灣大哥大 tomorrow, it’s too late for fussing around with it right now.
Here’s something that happened on my t68i AND my t610. I needed to delete ALL of the data accounts on the phone before downloading (well, getting that SMS sent) the GPRS data settings. I also had to download GPRS settings before the MMS settings to make them happily co-exist.
So my first tip is to make sure you delete all of the other account settings before you try messing around with getting your PDA and Sony phone to work together. With TCC there’s separate MMS and data settings, that might not be the case with ZhongHua. I’d still say delete everything and start from scratch anyway.
The number I dial is *99#, that’ll probably be the same. You’ll need to get the username and password from them. Maybe I’ll have a list of them all one day .
Wow. I’m glad you asked. They (TCC aka Taiwan Dageda) recently changed their plans. They are now as follows:
0NT/Month - .03NT/128 bytes
50NT/Month - 250KB/Month Free - .03NT/128 bytes for going over - 10 free MMS messages (within the TCC network)
150NT/Month - 1MB/Month free - .02NT/128bytes for going over - 30 free MMS messages (within the TCC network)
300NT/Month - 5MB/Month free - .008NT/128bytes for going over - 60 free MMS messages (within the TCC network)
600NT/Month - 35MB/Month free - .0045NT/128bytes for going over - 60 free MMS messages (within the TCC network)
1000NT/Month - 75MB/Month free - .002NT/128bytes for going over - 60 free MMS messages (within the TCC network)
If I recall correctly you were charged per 10KB before and I had always wondered how they did their rounding. It’s much clearer this way. It looks like the free account is more expensive than it was before (or it might be cheaper depending on how they did their rounding), but in the past they only had a 150NT plan, 300NT plan and 1000NT plan, and those all like like better deals than they were before. The free MMS’s are actually pretty cool. Me and a friend use them from time to time.
Sorry for my late reply, but I am out of the country for a while. I did find some Phone-link update for my Palm, which included settings for my cell phone and for Chunghwa. I haven’t got a chance to try it out yet. I will try it once I am back in Taipei. But thanks for your great suggestions. I am also still trying to figure out more details about the whole settings business, I am out of the loop with cell phones for a while. So I need to do some catching up.
When I tried to set-up my GPRS connection with Taiwan GSM I called the customer service hotline and they walked me through.
First I had to sent a message to a special number to which the network will reply and download the correct settings to your phone. Getting the laptop to talk to my Nokia phone though was much more difficult …

I got my Palm T3 to work with my SonyEricsson T610 via Bluetooth and GPRS using Chunghua. Let’s just say that it took a while on the phone with Chunghua support, guiding me through the configurations for my specific phone … in Chinese. Since then, I’ve set my phone up for use in the States with Cingular Wireless while on assignment here. Don’t have the Chunghua settings anymore, but wanted to let you know not to give up. It can be done, and surfing Forumosa.com is pretty cool.
Just baught an A780, and have yet to be able to use the web apps on it.
I have already had one phone replaced by Motorola and they still seem to be unsure as to what the problem is.
Some issues I’ve been having include…
Using Opera 7.5, I’m unable to connect to Gmail, or any other website including msn or yahoo. Gmail, because (as I haven’t used Opera in a while, was unaware) of the fact that only the latest beta version 8 supports Gmail.
Also the fact that you have to use the mail client to view your email and not the browser as the latter doesn’t support use of webmail.
There is no available form of support for either the phone or the software on it, save driving down to Motorola HQ on Ren Ai to drop it off with a technician who has only actually used the phone once. (This being my first phone)
I’ve posted on Oper’a community forum and found that Motorola has been having such problems with such phones for a while now.
Unfortunately, the only thing you’ll find if you do a google search on the phone is the great expectations that everyone has of it.
The main reason I baught it was that it’s linux based.
Any one think it would be a good idea to put up a sticky for PDA/ Smartphone/Mobile ?
I just readt that they’re coming out with a bunch of new Linux phones and I was thinking about getting one for my next phone (I think about a lot of things though).
You can turn on Gmail’s pop access and get to your email’s that way.
Just googled it. Looks like a sweet phone. I’m sure you can connect to yahoo and MSN by using their WAP sites. Gmail doesn’t have a WAP site yet, but there’s some opensource program that let’s you install a WAP browser on your site that will connect to Gmail for you (I tried it with little success, but others got it to work).
Guys, thanks for all the suggestions. Back in Taiwan I was able to try out the phone link update with Chunghwa, and it work. All I did was installing the phone link update and follow the setup wizard. I guess sometimes it is not advice to try things manually. Anyway, I can use Web Pro and VersaMail on my Palm to access email and www via the phone.

Around how much was that phone if I may ask?[/quote]
Wouldn’t suggest it yet Miltown…
Still haven’t found an answer to my issue with Secure connections via the Opera 7.5 or the proprietary web client. FYI…Opera has only recent begun to support connections with Gmail servers.
The guys at Motorola are chasing their tales and end every email with, " if you have any further questions, please contact Customer Care directly at…" while not even coming close to dealing with the issue at hand.
As for the, “Linux based phones,” as I understand it, they are all pretty much still Java phones with a new name tag, as you can’t run anything, “Linux based,” on them. I tried to install Minimo several times before coming to this realization. The A780 only runs what the tiny( yet nonetheless powerful) little JM2E engine can handle.
As for Hotmail, I found that after connecting twice via Reqwireless’ EmailViewer, Hotmail got smart to my relative level of bliss and decided to only offer connections to Hotmail from Mobile phones, to subscribers of the Hotmail Plus service.
Yahoo only seems to work intermittently, and Gmail wasn’t working last week, but I noticed today that they had improved scalability somehow or other for their POP3 servers.
I’ll post again next week to let you know how it goes, as my girlfriend and I just had a Golden Retriever puppy given to us by a friend of my mechanic. Gotta stay home and house train him till Tuesday afternoon, when I have no choice but to leave for work.
