Green Tea, Mice and Alzheimer's
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) – An ingredient in green tea has prevented Alzheimer’s disease-like brain damage in mice, researchers report.

The compound, called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), decreased production of the protein beta-amyloid, which accumulates in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients and causes nerve damage and memory loss.

“The findings suggest that a concentrated component of green tea can decrease brain beta-amyloid plaque formation,” senior researcher Dr. Jun Tan, director of the Neuroimmunology Laboratory at the the University of South Florida’s Silver Child Development Center, said in a prepared statement.
Can’t help but wonder how many cases of Alzheimer’s there are in the Taiwanese population due to this ‘news’.

My mother’s family has a history of Alzheimer’s and that scares me a little.

Your comment confuses me a little … :s

The article states is a good discovery … and you’re scared about it … and taiwan is full of alzheimers now …? Don’t get it … :s

Maybe ‘many’ should be ‘many or few’ in my first post in this thread then the confusion wouldn’t be there.

I don’t like the taste of green tea and my family has a history of Alzheimers which means I’m genetically imposed to possibly suffering from it too. Taiwanese probably statistically speaking drink more green tea than Westerners. So percentage wise there are probably less cases here than in the Western world and I wonder if that’s the case.

Apostrophes for ‘news’ are because the other health benefits of green tea have been widely known in health circles for some time.

This possibly would have been better as a PM.

Very interesting. There are probably tons of Alzheimer’s cases. I wouldn’t be surprised that, if we had accurate statistics and people were more willing to admit it, there’d be a bigger percentage of cases here than in the US.

I suspect that people here do not admit to Alzheimer’s until it’s too late and they need to go to the hospital.

For sometime, psychologists have believed Alzheimer’s is highly influenced by your psyche. Imagine the effect of various bad moods and how they effect neurotransmitters. It’s not hard to believe that a lifetime of this is really gonna mess up those neurons.

As for treatment, I’ve heard of interesting things. There’s one book in particular I noted down somewhere. Remember also , the brain is quite capable of rebuilding itself; and neural connections can grow at anytime.
Maybe all that’s necessary is for someone to become a child again and try to relearn everything.

There have been cases of people recovering from strokes by beginning again, by doing things like crawling on the floor like a baby, rebuilding your senses.
