Greenpeace is to be fined after its flagship Rainbow Warrior II damaged a coral reef in the central Philippines during a climate change awareness campaign, marine park rangers said.

The ship and its crew were assessed a 640,000-peso (11,600-dollar) fine after the 55-meter (180-foot) motor-assisted schooner ran aground at the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park on Monday, park manager Angelique Songco told AFP.

The ship’s bow sliced through a reef formation measuring 160 square meters (1,722 square feet), she added.more at link

Inept wankers.

I noticed today in the newspaper that they bravely carried out a mock terrorist attack on John Prescott’s house when they knew his wife would be there alone at night as he was away campaigning. Brave boys! Well done! Scare a woman alone at home half to death!

Twats.

Well, they’re not daft enough to have a go at Two Jags himself – they know perfectly well he’d give their arses a sound kicking. He might still.
I wish these groups would be a bit more selective about the folk they recruit. You know, you really WANT to support them but for fuck’s sake, weed out the prats!

They still seem to welcome all those rent-a-thugs that used to append themselves to CND, Socialist Worker, Living Marxism rallies and so on. (Why am I thinking “George Galloway” all of a sudden…?! )

Nice headline, but as alwaysthe details don’t flesh out the negative view.

In a nutshell, Greenpeace crash into a reef because it wasn’t where it was marked, a fact acknowleged by the Philippine government, but immediately reports the damage, sends down divers and offers compensation. It also raises the issue of a protected reef being wrongfully marked on maritime maps.

Well, in my book that’s a big thumbs up. Agree that there are often too many cowboys attracted to these groups though.

Yep it is a headline. Re-reading both TC

How many reefs are well marked in the Pacific. GP aren’t exactly know for their good seamanship.

[quote]Oh, the pejorative use of cowboy is duly noted. I prefer to think that Greenpeace attracts too many

Don’t they have depth sounders or those sonar things that give you a nice picture of the bottom. So to speak.
