When I travelled in Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Russia, etc…), I was able to hire advanced students in English as guides. (I hate packaged tours and getting herded around.) Is anyone aware of similar options in Taipei or Tainan? And what would be a fair day’s wage?

Seconded. They are fantastic. I used them when a client was here last month for a 4 day trip and they made life a breeze.
