Interesting that the bribe, erm, sorry, fine is different for different people.
And just half a million for the accountant to stay out of jail after evading - what - 30-40 million in taxes, maybe. Either the judge isn’t very good at math, or the accountant is of the secret-handshake persuasion.
Presumably it’s commensurate with their degree of culpability…or, um, how deep their pockets are.

I’ve actually seen this with my own eyes in Shenzhen. People scooping oily crap direct from the gutter. Its disgusting, to put it mildly, but is it more revolting than factory farming?

Levels of the carcinogen benzopyrene exceed the limit.
It seems the issue for the fine is not the contamination per se (I don’t see the exact level of contamination from scanning the article), but that they delayed reporting it.
Limit is 2.0 ppm, tested at 8.1ppm, Taiwan follows EU regulations. No hard limit in the US.
That’s well above. I’m not familiar with that chemical but it doesn’t sound great.

Either something is wrong with their SOPs or there was fraud committed. The regulations are clear. Was it only one batch or were older batches also over the limit?
We should also understand that soyabean oil in and of itself is probably not that good for you. It has a high smoke point so at least it is better than some other oils for cooking.
Soybean oil is neither purely “good” nor “bad.” It provides heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats and vitamin E, but overconsumption—common in processed foods—can lead to an excess of omega-6 fatty acids. This imbalance may promote chronic inflammation and metabolic issues.
