If anyone out there is looking for an English speaking hairdresser, I have a friend who has a salon just off Shi Da road, right beside Welcome.
She is a properly trained stylist with a lot of experience. Her prices are very competitive.

I had a haircut (near Shilin market) and they washed my hair three times. It looked more like a hostess bar than a barbers. Does anyone know where there is a real barbers shop? With a gruff, thick set Italian who never smiles and chain smokes? (Its the little things that make me homesick)

OK, OK…it costs extra to have my tongue shaved.
Probably not as cheap as $120 but it’s more of a salon than a gents barbers. I can’t imagine too many of the newbie western girls over here wandering into the local barbers and risking the $100 special.
Looking at some of the women’s “bowl over the head” and “scissors in one hand, mirror in the other” cuts I see all the time here, I should open a “salon.”

Agreed with Olison. I have been going to that salon for a year. Discovered it while I lived in the area, but since then moved to Jonghe and tried another salon. Bloody awful. My hair looked like a shaggy dog had been dragged over my scalp despite me having asked them NOT to do that slicing, layer thing most hairdressers here do with scissors. That took six months to grow out.
It’s worth taking the time to go to the one in Shida Road. The lady there is friendly, understands what you want done with your hair and accordingly cuts your hair the way you want it.
