The air circulation thing is crazy. We found out during that big power outage in May (?) that the windows in most of our classrooms are sealed shut. I wonder how they’ll get around that.

Going back to work is going to be an adventure for many of us. I’m sure we’re going to have some crazy workarounds to share here on forumosa.

How did they even pass the fire inspection?

I’m a bit confused by the weekly PCR test requirement; does that mean a test from a hospital? Or is a rapid-fire test okay?

> How did they even pass the fire inspection?

A school I taught at would change things up when the fire inspector came. Even pulled down a magically appearing garage door gate over the door to the basement, which only had one exit but was typically used all day long. They also put “fire department inspection” on the school calendar that they provided to families. Then they got ratted out for use of the basement and lied to the parents about refurbishing or something until the end of the school year, only to reopen use of the basement the following year. So sometimes they were very transparent and sometimes not at all…
I need to learn to use 1999 better. Take photos as evidence, call 1999. They will let the school know ahead of time about the “surprise” inspection. When your response from 1999 is “this situation you reported is not happening”, you reply with “I have photo and video evidence that it is. Do your job or I will contact the press” and then they will take care of it correctly. I doubt anyone is fined but at least they don’t let the school get away with it anymore if you tell them you have evidence and threaten to take it to the press. The inspecting person’s name is on the report from 1999 and I doubt any red envelope from a cram school is big enough to cover them for life.
If you don’t call 1999, they continue to do whatever the heck they want. Use someone else’s phone to call and give a fake name if you’re worried about repercussions. They don’t need your ID number for you to file a report on 1999, so it’s almost, though not necessarily entirely, anonymous

Yeah.

I’m somewhat safer here now (knock wood), but when I first got here, my thought was, “I’m working without a net.” If something like this had happened back then, my thought might have been, “I _was_ merely working without a net. _Now_ I’m working without a net in a strong crosswind.”

I’m curious about how the number of students in each class will work. Our biggest classrooms will probably only support around 10 students at a time and we have many windowless rooms. Perhaps we should all make a table or something to make sure we all know what the limits are. I’m pretty determined to make sure my school doesn’t force me into anything that violates the policies.

I fixed this in my original post.

We’ll see how many of these operators honor this rule. This is about protecting the health of everyone. Let’s see how many operators actually care.

I seriously doubt all cram schools are gonna enforce all rules. What happens in a cram school, stays in a cram school.

What number can we call to report them when they don’t? We all know they won’t listen to us, but they will listen to teachers that refuse to do anything they’re uncomfortable with and call the government to report it.

Just remember to protect your identity!
You’ll be fired and never get a job in Taiwan again because you’ll forever be marked as the foreigner who reports stuff. It’s unfortunate that it has to be like this…but this is how it is.

I also suggest all foreigners in Taiwan start preparing for a potential exit plan. Prepare to be treated like an infected zombie if something goes bad in your school. With this being said, I also suggest you minimize your “high risk” activities.

With DELTA out and about in the world you never know where the next slip up might be. Taiwan dodged a lot of bullets in the past with the NZ pilot and NAVY ship screw ups including the 3+11 pilot quarantine screwups. IF that was delta we’d be knee deep in piss and shit. Taiwan’s going to need to play full court press the entire time.

Funny thing is my boss once told us to stay inside when covid first happened, she said to NOT go to bars and avoid places with crowds, next day I saw the manager absolutely lit up at the bar. LOL.

Personally I think they should keep schools closed for another month and keep doing online teaching, but problem is buxibans primary purpose is often a daycare center. So that’s not going to work for parents who need to go to work.

I guess the problem is now in the school owners hands, and I’m very interested to see how they proceed forward.

My question is, lets say one students family member was somehow in touch with a case, does that mean that students parent including the student and entire school now have to go into quarantine?

p.s. this is Korea, also mentions Japan at times.

Totally agree. Grade schoolers could be tricky, but there’s no reason for middle and high schoolers to give up online courses.

Really?

They aren’t learning nearly as much online. They are getting left behind. Not to mention the psychological cost of not seeing friends or leading normal lives. They deserve better.

That was said by a teacher and a parent of four.

And why is that so? People tend to assume it’s because it’s “online”. But is that true? Have you not met any kid that taught themselves Japanese so they could play games? Kids that study history because of online games? Kids that calculate the damage count using math? Kids that study physics because of sci-fi games?

People complain about how addictive online games are, and assume that kids can’t focus while learning “online”?

Imo it’s the teachers that’s not putting enough effort. Most teachers are not familiar with virtual classrooms, so they don’t know how to design activities that could catch student’s attention. My students all think online teaching is better, because I utilize many online/offline computers resources.

And yes, human contact is irreplaceable, and they do deserve better. But is (risking) COVID better?
