Happy new year, fat people live longer! (maybe)

Findings just released by the prestigious “Journal of the American Medical Association” (don’t bother clicking unless you’re a doctor or something but wanted to get this out there up front)

One of many reports today, WSJ:

A Few Extra Pounds Won’t Kill You—Really

And the inevitable nay-sayers:

The Problem With All of This ‘Overweight People Live Longer’ News

The Atlantic. Probably a bunch of anemic, dyspeptic salad nibbling types.

Morbidly obese people live longer…when food supplies vanish

TG Happy New Year. I don’t know about longer, but as a fat person, I know we live WIDER!

This surely falls into the category of “technically true but irrelevant”?. Obese people die prematurely young and have a reduction in Quality-Adjusted Life Years at the end. That’s well-established. But surveying people outside of that particular age bracket (say, 50-70) will give you a different picture because young fat people and young skinny people just don’t die that often, and when they do, it’s usually caused by accidents, suicide, non-fat-related illnesses, etc. The study does NOT say overweight people live longer.

Anyway, it’s a silly way of quoting the result. Let’s say your risk of dying this year is 1 in 1000. Reduce that risk by 5% and your risk is 1 in 1050. Hardly an enormous difference, is it? You could account for that by guessing that fat people bounce if you hit them with a car or drop them off a tall building. Of course, that would have to be tested experimentally.

Especially if they eat the normal people. Mmmm, braaains.

Those researches are real fun

Today I’ve read that some British one found that women drinking 2 alcoholic drinks/day are 11% less likely to be overweight. Bottoms up!

Under what circumstances would a fat person have an advantage in a life-threatening situation?
Car crash - there must be some form of natural air-bag effect there. Same for falling.
Exposure - the wind can’t chill your bones as easily if they’ve swaddled in fatty tissue.
Lost - you won’t starve as quickly.
Drowning - more buoyant in salt-water?
Shooting - more tissue to slow down the bullet before it reaches central organs.

The list is endless!
