Have you ever felt unwelcomed by other expats who own restaurants in Taiwan?

It would be also annoying if I ask you to write an essay in Esperanto and you say “You don’t know” hehehe

But, I didn’t feel bothered. I think they were just curious. The problem was I wasn’t the one who asked them. They did. They asked me. So, I answered their questions.

The word “Chandelier” isn’t English either. But, they use this word in English. This is annoying for sure.

I’ve never had anything like this. I’m pretty unlikeable and also easily turned off. That said, I’ve don’t always manage to catch them in a mirror making faces at me. Actually, that’s never happened. How does this consistently happen with you enough to identify a trend with the majority for foreign restauranteurs?

I don’t know. That’s why I am asking. I know they were supposed to be friendly. That’s why I go there. I am ABT, not raised in USA. I don’t know if they mistake me with other Taiwanese and they had past bad experience with other local customers. So, they started seeing me in a negative way because they are traumatized with other bad experience. Then, it is not my problem.

Maybe you’re just paranoid?

Or there is some genuinely annoying or repulsive about you? Would most people describe you as pleasant, not unattractive, and with a neutral or better smell?

Not mentioning any names or descriptions, but it was one expat ran restaurant in East Taipei some years ago. A friend and me went there like 3-4 times over a couple of months. The owner was kind of friendly, but every time he was going on about wanting bigger groups coming in for business, after hearing this a couple of times it got a bit annoying so we stopped going there, felt like he didn’t really wanted us there as we were only 2 persons

You were fine in your answers.
Yes, their reaction unordinary.
Likely they’ve never encountered that answer. :+1:

Something like this happened to me. I haven’t been to all the expat restaurants. Only 4 of them. I asked this question. Some people are telling me to not come back. Possibly, they know this really happens, and it is wrong.

I mean it’s not your typical answer.

I would probably not go around saying that tbh. I know lots of people who have family money and I’m never heard any of them say that about themselves. It comes off like some K drama imo.

Surely. But, remember I am not bashing on expats restaurants specifically. I didn’t even give names. My intention is not ruining their reputation. My question is genuine to know if people had the same experience. If not, then they might not like me. It is fine, too. I won’t come back. This answers my question.

You never know when you’ll meet another 1%-er.

My experience of this, have only been at that one restaurant, other expat and local restaurants have not been like this, so I wouldn’t say it’s a trend

If one restaurant is giving you poor attitude or are being annoying, chose other restaurants

Maybe you have a reputation?

When I was living in Taipei I was very social and knew a lot of expats who own restaurants and bars and even did some work for some of them promoting their place. ABTs, expats, and rich Taiwanese crowds usually go together.

There were definitely a few people who were of ill repute and people didn’t like them.

Why are you even trying to impress these Expat Restaurant Royalty? If you’re not rolling in with a pack of rich Asians ready to drop NT$10K on craft beer and truffle fries, they see you as just another broke white pleb. No tip? No status? No service.

Do yourself a favour, crawl back to a foreigner bar, where unemployed English teachers and washed-up backpackers drown their failures in cheap whiskey. At least there, no one will pretend to be better than you.

I only argued with 1 expat. But, it was about 13 years ago. That person was a nobody. Unless he badmouthed about me and this made an effect. But, I doubt 1 person from 13 years ago will be a big influence at 4 restaurants? Also, he was a teacher who seduces his female students.

I have a comfortable lifestyle, but I don’t care about impressing others. I am not the type who talk a lot about Bitcoin. But, we all know those people are lying about their money. Good idea! I will crawl to a bar with unemployed English teachers. As long as they are nice to me. I am fine.

Thats probably correct.

They had a bad experience with Taiwanese in the past. And as you are a Taiwanese (ABT) they associate you with those Taiwanese they dislike… who probaly make up 99.9% of their customers.

So yes they probably spend all day doing fake smiles and making faces, makes sense. Or it was because you didn’t tip.

lol. I will keep being myself then. Next time, I will tip them with 1 cent. That would be definitely a real review. More effective than posting here. lol
