I’m trying to install a Firefox add-on extension called “VideoDownloader” which would allow me to download Flash videos (like the videos at YouTube). It’s available at this website:
You’re supposed to be able to download it and install it simply by clicking on the “Install Now” button on this webpage. But every time I click on that button, I get a message at the top of my Firefox window that says “Software installation is currently disabled. Click Edit Options to enable it.” Then there’s a button called “Edit Options” on the ride side, and when I click on that, it goes to Tools -> Options -> Content.
I have already set up Firefox to enable Java and JavaScripts and to let websites download extensions. So why doesn’t it work? (By the way, I’m using Firefox 1.5.0.7, which is the latest version.)
I just figured it out. I went to the configuration menu of Firefox by typing in “about:config” in the address bar. Then I reset the boolean variable xpinstall.enabled to be TRUE. (The default is FALSE.) Then I re-started Firefox and now it lets me download add-ons!
However, unfortunately, the VideoDownloader add-on does not work for YouTube videos, which are Flash videos (FLV format).
I haven’t yet tried it for other videos, but it definitely doesn’t work for YouTube videos. So I’m going to try downloading the DownloadHelper add-on from this website, which should let me download YouTube videos.
Then get the Nightly Tester Tools extension which you can use to make any extension compatible.
And away you go. I’ve been using it for ages without any problems.
You could also try a new one, Drag de Go. I’ve never used it so can’t vouch for it: It offers the same thing but with some extra features.
