Well that would be very sad because if that is true then there is no afterlife either. And after we die there is eternal void as far as we are concerned. We become from nothing and unto nothing.

The universe was not created by God, scientist Stephen Hawking has said in his new book.
Professor Hawking believes the laws of physics were behind the Big Bang instead, in a challenge to traditional religious beliefs.
Of course if you want to sell a new book that is good marketing 
And of course we know the laws of physics were made by god.
But that doesn’t follow: it assumes that a god is necessary for there to be an afterlife.
I think God already was pretty clear: from dust we come, to dust we return. or perhaps if you want to be “heretical”, the other "“Gospel” Thomas Didymos: Kingdom of Heaven is here and now on earth.

Buddhists don’t believe either in a creator god or that “nothing exists except matter”. That might seem scary - no god to look after us and take responsibility; and also no comfortable nothingness into which we sink at death. But it’s really very hopeful - the positive actions you choose to do right now will have positive effects in the future.

The word ‘God’ does not have a single definition and is not a clearly definable concept. According to my religion, if the laws of physics created the universe then the laws of physics is God.
Hawking has been submitting to the laws of physics for decades, gravity in particular. We all do eventually.
Hawking once wrote: “If we do discover a theory of everything…it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason—for then we would truly know the mind of God.”
NOt as knowledgeable on the Good Book as Lucifer, but if I recall, theres something bout an upcoming end to the universe as we know it. And that it doesnt really matter anyway as our afterlife exists on a different plane and is not dependent on the present physical universe, something like that 
So we are safe (maybe).

Perhaps he’s talking about god in the same way that Einstein did: like Spinoza’s god. Also a form of pantheism.
