I am interested in living and working in Taiwan, but would also consider Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. However, I realize that it will be very difficult for me since I have almost no work experience, am not fluent in Mandarin, and do not have a Taiwanese wife.
I am currently in a Master’s program in STEM in the US. Do you guys think that after I finish my Master’s, I could head to Taiwan and expect to find some job within 3 months? Would it be any easier in Singapore, Hong Kong, or Japan?
Finding a job won’t be a problem. Finding a job directly related to your field of study, one that allows you to grow your skill set and pays accordingly? Unlikely. STEM degrees are a dime a dozen here. Avoid Taiwan at all costs unless you’re dying to learn Mandarin or experience a year or two abroad off the beaten track.
Pay is much higher in both Singapore and Hong Kong. Japan has a similar problem as Taiwan in terms of stagnant wage growth and stifling corporate culture. Very limited opportunities without any meaningful Japanese.
You’re better off staying in the US. You won’t get the same quality of care in Taiwan.
Japan and Taiwan are among your options… so you haven’t been to either of them? They’re SO VERY different.
