Today on NPR they are rerunning an interesting interview with Francis Ford Coppla’s wife who made the behind the scenes documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now. It makes for interesting listening. The documentary has just been released on DVD 16 years after release on cable. I wonder if it will be available in Taiwan.

Thanks for the link, Fox.

I’ve seen parts of this documentary, but I look forward to seeing the whole thing.

I hope that one day a book is written about the interview they did with Francis Ford Coppla’s wife who made the behind the scenes documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now. In this way the hippy generation can perhaps postpone facing up to it’s insignificance in the tragic face of things forever. We deserve that much, don’t we?

I hope that one day they do an interview with you bob and just call it: “The Tragic Face of the Hippy Generation Rides Again”

Why didn’t I think of that?

Thanks the bear.

What a wasted education we had on all that crap about how to use the microfish in libraries or punch card computing. I’m such a retard these days that I forget that almost everything your heart desires can be found on Utube, and then some.

Yeah, thanks, the bear.

I’ll check it out on YouTube.

I still like Coppola’s take on the shoot: "“We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane.”

This quote is also used in the UNKLE track “UNKLE (Main Title Theme).”

That’s a great movie, right up there in the pantheon of “films about creating films that turned out to be real nightmares to make” with Les Blank’s Burden of Dreams (about the making of Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo).

Another on that theme that I haven’t seen is Lost in La Mancha, about the (un)making of Terry Gilliam’s ill-fated The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

It happens.

It was a silly film. Never got the point of its being made. Which was maybe the point.

Yeah. That’s funny.

This I love:
Coppla:
In a way, I’m in a room standing on a floor covered in Vaseline and I’m trying to get ahead, but all these new elements keep comin’ at me and now I got Marlon Brando as an incredible joker to play and he’s like a force of his own ‘cause he don’t give a shit and I want a character of monumental nature who is struggling with the extremities of his soul and is struggling with them on such a level that you are in awe of it and (he) is destroyed by them.

To which Brando replies in improv. “It takes bravery. The deepest bullets are not to be feared; phosphorous napalm or nothing to be feared, but to look inward to see that twisted mind that lies beneath the surface of all humans and to say yes I accept you, I even love you because you are a part of me, you are an extension of me…”

…and Francis, you are fucking annoying me.
