My personal situation has me returning to my to my mother-in-law’s house every couple of years for a prolonged stay. And as per the last time I was here, I’m slightly annoyed by 1) the poor quality of the broadcast of the cable TV channels, save that they aren’t even broadcast in widescreen/digital and 2) as a follow on, the internet on cable modem being slow and unreliable.
I believe that the root cause of the problem is mostly the poor cable service to this non-urban part of Hukou, Xinzhu county. I could bug my wife to inturn bug the cable TV company, but as in the past, I don’t expect this to make much of a difference.
What I am really hoping for is an alternative form of “carriage”. The two possibles that come to mind being copper/phone line, and satellite. As far as I’m aware, the former will deliver internet via ADSL, but not much way to resolving the cable TV problem. Or indeed my hope that we can get Digital to the modest, but yet modern widescreen digital TV set. And would the copper line be any better than the cable we are getting into the house anyway?
I do recall SatelliteTV discussing with me offline about two years ago now (thank you SatelliteTV) the possibility of delivery of both these over satellite. I would be interested in this if 1) it is still an option and 2) it would deliver the bulk of the cable channels that my mother-in-law views/gets now.
It seems a long shot, but any suggestions on a “happy medium” would be greatly appreciated. In the end, cost will also be a factor, but having options on the the table would be a good start.
Thanks in advance.
After having a sleep, I’ve realised how silly I’ve been. You can’t get internet over satellite, right? How would you transmit? Don’t know where I got that idea.
In anycase, any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sure you can. It’s called Vsat. Usually used on oil rigs so they can have communications with land based offices, or those based in remote locations. Quite common in Australia.
I have Microwave satellite dish broadband in Australia so I can watch Foxtel Fox Sports and all the Aussie FTA channels like CH 7 Ch 9 CH 10 One HD and other stuff in Taiwan.
In any case if you really want to see what we have on offer suggest you visit my website or contact me by email. Out HDTV streaming can work with 2mb download or less adsl but thats almost unheard of slow speeds nowadays.
Even in Alishan ADSL is 8mb on phone lines. Fiber is mostly everywhere nowadays and so is ADSL. Stay away from cable modem as that is generally unreliable.
