A beautifully-groomed, young, male husky has turned up at my kids’ school. It’s been there almost a week. We live in an area good for outings and hikes, so the dog may have run away from its owner, or it might have been dumped. The principal does not want to take call the pound as it would be put down fairly quickly if nobody claimed it. We can’t catch it to take it to the vet to see if it is chipped. So, I was wondering if anyone here knows of a group or individual who would have a portable chip reader or other way to sort this problem out. It is a beautiful dog and right now seems friendly yet shy. I’m worried if it hangs around the locals will start to be aggressive toward it and it will start to show signs of aggression to keep people away, then its fate will be sealed.
We are in Chidu (near Xijir). Any ideas appreciated!

when you say that you cant catch it, why is that?
who is feeding the dog now?
Hi omerojs,
Nobody was really feeding the dog until yesterday. I saw the dog when I took my kids for their first day of school. I’ve worked out that nobody really knew what to do so nobody did anything. Yesterday morning, after ideas from Animals Taiwan, I figured out the dog was actually friendly and we got it on a leash, into my car, and up to the pound to get checked for a chip. The guys up there said they have seen it round and they are pretty sure it’s been dumped. It doesn’t have a chip. The teachers all pitched in and got it bathed and checked out at the vet, bought it food, and found it a safe place to stay last night. It’s a beautiful, quiet, young male, and a staff member is taking it home today for a try-out. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll foster it. No matter what happens, the teachers are going to get it vaccinated. So, a happy ending should be in sight for the dog. It’s lovely of the teachers, and funny how for nearly two weeks nobody did anything because they weren’t sure what action to take. (It took me 15 minutes to convince them I don’t mind the dog smell or hair in my old car! Once we got over that hurdle, everyone was in on the action.)
*Title changed to better reflect current situation.

That was a great action from your side!!!
many times its all about not knowing what to do and not being sure if its the right thing…
sometimes i see some great dogs on the street, they need a bath and some basic care and they would be ready for adoption, the problem is that i cannot really foster any dogs as i have my own dog and a cat and a baby coming in a few weeks… but i would love to have the guts to just help the doggies out…
thanks again for setting the example!!
Well, the husky is now in my yard. The wife of the guy that took him in ended up in hospital with an allergic reaction to dog hair, apparently, so here he is:

We are now going to have to look at what to do with him. That will most likely be arranging a home for him in North America. They are just not suited to Taiwan’s climate. I’d hate to see him in an apartment and eventually dumped again. That will mean fund raising and finding a home, but he’s a really beautiful dog and I think worth the effort.
Aren’t you supposed to do a walkaround with the rental agent before you drive it away???
Sorry, I don’t understand your comment.
Is there any way to change the original title to reflect that we are trying rehome this guy?
