Hiking in Taiwan - the 523 Mountaineering Association

If you can’t get with an organized hike, you can still get some great walking done in Taiwan. There are books available on local day hikes. The Saunders book on day hikes 2 should still be available at any Eslite Bookstore - I like the one across from National Taiwan University. That book has directions to Bei Cha Tian Shan (north piercing sky mountain). Of all the walks I’ve done in the Taipei area this was the biggest kick in the ass. I really liked it and didn it several times. Don’t bother with the peak itself unless you like tripping a lot; just hike to the old forest. The people you meet along the way will not be great in number but they are the best. Take food and water. If you have a stove you can cook up some tea at the top. That’s more important in winter.

For extended hikes, you’re going to have to get a response from someone or rely on whatever the national parks provide. I’ve done extended hikes and have camped out recently over the hill from Neiwan. The nice fellow there said he could take me up further in the hills when I get back next time and there is a Japanese era stone trail that was used to pacify the mountain areas by getting police in from Dahsi (Daxi) quickly. The hikes and trails are there and you have to give them a little respect if you go up very far. Take a stick for keeping from falling and for defending yourself from the poor dogs that have been released in the hills. A bitch with a pup will attack you and think nothing of it - literally.

Otherwise, it is really really beautiful.

I will be putting in an application this weekend for a hike of Yushan on July 16-17th (meet up 15th evening, back in Taipei 17th night). If you’re interested in making up numbers, get your ARC number, nationality, name, and date of birth to me before this Sunday (June 1st). Further details, as usual, can be found at barking-deer.com/yushan.htm

Putting together Yushan trips for August 21-22, and August 26-28 (a harder 3-day traverse via Batongguan/Dungpu)

I hope this doesn’t run afoul of any cross posting rules/stepping on other’s turf. Apologies etc if necessary!

Hi

any hiking trip after february?

azman

Hello. My name is Darwin Roos. I live in Bloomington, IN, USA. I lived in Taipei from 6/95-5/03 and still really miss it. Taiwan still feels more like home to me than the US does. I’m very open to possibly moving back to Taiwan. Since I’m into hiking and backpacking, I’m interested in finding out more about hiking and backpacking in Taiwan. I have a couple questions:

1) Are there any long distance trails (160 Km or more) in Taiwan? If so, where could I get information about them?
2) Are there any hiking/backpacking clubs in Taiwan? If so, is there an e-mail address I could reach them at?

Thank you for your time. Take care and have a great day.

                                                                       Sincerely,
                                                                                        Darwin

Hi guys.

Sorry for the last minute warning/announcement!

I will likely guide a small group up Yushan on March 31st/April 1st (Tuesday/Wednesday, meet up March 30th evening, can be back in the city late on the 1st). I probably have space for a couple more people. The problem is, I will be applying for the permit this Friday afternoon (February 27th) and will need names, passport or ARC number, and your date of birth before then.

Hello from Germany,

I am trying to plan my vacation in Taiwan. Is there any Yushan trip planned for June already? Not sure if my Taiwanese wife will acompany me onto Yushan…

Thanks in advance…

Hi Dater

I will have an Yushan hike sometime in June - not sure when exactly yet. Send me an email barkingdeerinfo@gmail.com and perhaps I can arrange a trip around your dates. If our times don’t work out I can sort out all the permits, maps, and info you need to do it yourself - a very feasible option.

Look kids, that’s rain outside!

You have mail!

Hello kdk,

did Volviic reply to you already?

I really would love to climb Yushan

Hi Dater & KDK

I did/have.

I have a group going up Yushan June 15 and 16th (permit issued, meet up Sunday the 14th, return the 16th evening), and may be in a position to change a couple of the names. Contact me asap, Yushan Main Peak permits are still as rare as teeth on a hen with a betel nut habit. barkingdeerinfo@gmail.com

That reminds me, in a few days I will be posting a schedule for the rest of the year’s hikes. Some exciting stuff to look forward to…

Some other hikes that we really hope can be scheduled in closer to the time, but depend on typhoons, snow, and various other - more human - factors:

Cilai East Ridge (奇萊東稜). The epic 6-day from Hehuan right down into Taroko Gorge.
Snow West Ridge (雪山西稜). The, still technically/terminally closed, 7-day route exiting at Dasyueshan.
Nanhu Dashan (南湖大山). The 3-day wintery Northeastern beauty…and other peaks in the area.
Southern First Section (南一段). The 6-day, lacking in water, ridge south of Yushan Nat. Park
Jyunda (郡大). 2 days for views of the best peaks in the center of Taiwan.
Gandzwowan (干卓萬).The approach from Aowanda.

Taiwan has some real wilderness, some rough conditions and danger is to be expected. You should only attempt activities that you have the appropriate experience and ability to deal with.

Hi, I’ve recently come to Taipei and am interested in some hikes. Are there any Yushan trips or other hikes planned for July/August that I can join?

Afraid not with me for the next few weeks, going home to get away from it all… Application numbers are ridicilous over the summer holidays and publicity from the ‘new 7 wonders’ competition has made things even worse for getting permits. Try contacting the National Park directly…or catching me on a proactive moment. Remember there are many many other fantastic mountains in Taiwan.

Richard, saying hi to you all from a lovely trail in the middle of Taroko Gorge…why am I on Forumosa.com…?

A certain esteemed Forumosan and myself will be doing the tough 6/7-day hike of Cilai East Ridge October 12-18. If interested in joining us, check out barkingdeernews.blogspot.com/201 … ridge.html for a few more details.

Hi there, would anyone be able to advise me on where to find a good deal on hiking poles? I’m looking for some basic light ones.

Also what trail would you recommend for a half day hike? Nothing too serious, but I’m looking to get around a bit tomorrow and watch the sunset maybe. I thought I saw a trail across from Shilin night market, so maybe I’ll try that.

Near the main train station on Zhongshan Rd are a number of hiking shops with poles.

Lots of half day hikes. The north is a hikers paradise. But not all are very well marked and it’s best to go with experienced hikers on a lot of trails until you get used to conditions. Taiwan is really not like most places.

Check out my blog, recommendations on Forumosa, and Richard Saunders Taipei Day Trips books (available at Eslite).

If you want a short hike to see the sunset take the MRT to Xindian. Cross the lot to the river and cross the suspension bridge. Follow the road and turn left at the first chance (100m from the suspension bridge). Just follow the road up till it turns to trails. Maybe an hour return though unparalleled views over the city, fantastic sunsets, and a jungle environment.

The hiking club will also likely be heading out for a good 6-7 hour climb this weekend.

I was planning some hikes in May, and just found out that the 523 Mountaineering Association now lists their events on facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=62310365281#!/group.php?gid=62310365281&v=app_2344061033

Thought it might be interesting to add this info to this thread.

523 Hike: 2012/8/25 Tonho Old Road & Seediq Bale movie scenes

Since Tonho old road, which connects Taipei county and Yi-Lan county, is located behind Datonshan, Wu-Lai, it is called “Tonho”. In the early periods, it was a hunting trial of Atayal tribe and also one of three cross-ridge old roads. Tonho stream, which is not only a source of Greater Taipei region but also a summer resort for visitors of playing water, meanders in the mountain, forming rapid flow, short waterfall, flat pool and shoal, presenting totally different enchanting feelings. From 9.5K to 13K are film scenes of movie “Seediq Bale”, we would find a good place to be close to the water. In this historic route is a shaded trial, followed by a creek that murmurs the sound of flowing water. The scenery in Tonho is like in paradise. Moreover, when hiking on this route, one can sense its antiquity. Besides, the saddle, the climax of cross–ridge road, border between Taipei and Yilan County, has a large-area awn which seems vaster under strong north-eastern monsoon.

523 Hike: 0923(Sun.)Turtle Island + 401 Highland

As soon as the train exits Caoling Tunnel, tourists will glimpse their first view of Turtle Island, floating upon the ocean surface. As the train tracks curve about, the view of Turtle Island will vary, so keep your eyes glued! Turtle Island, also known as Turtle Mountain Islet, is located 10 kilometers east of the Touchen Town coastline. It is a volcanic island located within the ocean, named for its similarity to a floating turtle. The island is 3.3 kilometers wide from east to west and 1.7 kilometers long, coming to a total area of 2.85 kilometers squared, with a total coastline of approximately 10 kilometers. However, even with its small size, there are steep cliffs, active hot springs, hills and peaks, erosion caves, lakes, cold springs, rare cliff vegetation and a rich ocean ecology. With the erosion of ocean water and the rise and fall of the tide, Turtle Island is indeed a beautiful gem in the ocean.
According to records, the first residents of the island arrived from Fujian and Taiwan during the reign of Qing Emperor Guangxu. In 1977, the residents of Turtle Island decided to move together to the Gueishandao Community located in Dashi Neighborhood, Touchen Town, and allow the island to become a restricted area with only soldiers stationed by the military. On August 1st, 2000, the island was officially opened to tourists, and the Northeast Coast Administrative Center began the planning, development, and management of this island. With its unique, rich and relatively untouched ecological resources, the administrative center decided to designate it as an outer seas ecological park. This not only added a new recreational spot for the Northeast Coast, but also encouraged the development of the marine tourism industry.
401 Highland (At the very beginning it was 398 meters, but later 3 meters observation platform was built. Then it became 401 meters) and north coast trial belong to long difficult trial. We should pay attention to falling rocks, holes in the ground, fallen trunks, bees and snakes, etc. We need to hire a native licensed guide.
