The Atayal of Sikayo (known today as Huanshan) called this snow covered peak Babo Hagai. The current name comes from another Atayal name for the mountain, Sekoan, which was transliterated into the Mandarin Xuewengshan or Xueshan. Xueshan was previously known as Mt. Sylvia to English speakers, and today it is sometimes called Snow Mountain in English. It is also romanized as Hsuehshan or Syueshan. During the Japanese colonial period, the mountain was known as Tsugi Kouzan (referring to its status as the second highest peak in the Empire after Yushan). After the KMT arrived in Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek gave the mountain the name Xinglongshan. Xueshan probably has more names than any other mountain in Taiwan!
Xueshan is 3886 meters high, making it the second highest peak in Taiwan. It rises more than 2000 meters from Wuling farm at the start of the climb, going through many different climate zones. In addition, the Northeast monsoon travels directly through the Lanyang river valley to Xueshan, making snowfalls on the mountain the highest in Taiwan. During the ice age, glaciers covered the mountain, leaving behind glacial landforms. Today, the cold climate contributes to the mountain’s unique ecology, including a number of extremely rare high mountain plants and a large number of wild animals – the Black Forest near the top of the mountain is home to species including the Formosan Black Bear, the Formosan Serow, and Reeves’s Muntjac.
