Hongbao giving within the family

My girlfriend didn’t get a red envelope on New Years, but she still had to give one to all of her siblings. She said it’s because she’s the oldest, but is that just a family tradition or is it common?

IN my family ( I am half Taiwanese) only people who are not working and making money got hong paos from parents. But aunties and uncles are free to give you one because they are your elders.

If an older sibling is working and younger ones are not, he/she COULD give them hong paos (if she/he pleases).

I think different families have different “rules”

That’s common.

My family too. I let the Mrs. handle all the bookkeeping.
