Hot Spring Resort with 2 hours of Taipei

Looking for any ideas of a place to take my wife for a weekend of hot spring tomfoolery. Surprise for her so I’m on my own trying to find one. I can find a lot online but I was wondering if anyone has any personal recommendations of an area to choose or better still, a hotel. I want to get out of Taipei so Beitou is out. Heading on a friday at 4 so 2 hours max drive.
I’d be particularly interested in any quiet out of the way spots. Doesn’t need to be convenient for walking. We’ll have the car.
Any ideas?

In two hours you are in Jiaoxi, unless there is a traffic jam in the tunnel(s) of Freeway 5.

There are quite a few hot-spring resort hotels there, the best known being http://www.hrjhotel.com.tw.

A bit closer to Taipei is the Tienlai Resort on the other side of Yangmingshan http://www.tienlai.com.tw/en/about-1.htm.

Or you can go to Wulai. Probably the best (and most expensive) hot-spring place there is http://www.springparkhotel.com.tw

Taian in Miaoli is a two hour drive. Cedarwood. Beautiful classy place. Been there a few times.

Taian also has really stunning scenery and at the end of the road (.5km) from Cedarwood you can walk along the river and find big pools for swimming in.

There is also Big Root outside Sanxia on the way to Full Moon Park.

Interesting coincidence, these are the ones I would of recommended. Tienlai works, get the new building in back, the buffet isn’t my favorite. Royal Chiao shi is maybe my favorite in Taiwan for an extreme exclusive getaway feeling.

Never been to Taian, but always wanted to check it out. Maybe that’s a bit more like what irishmoe had in mind.
