I am planning to move from the US to the Jhong-Li area to find work and housing. I have a friend of a friend who lives there. I have been poking around this website (specifically the housing classifieds) to scope out the housing situation in Jhong-Li.
However, almost all the classified posts are relevant only to Taipei. WHY IS THAT?
Am I not looking in the right spot on this site? Are there no jobs and/or houses elsewhere? Is there just a very small ex-pat population in cities other than Taipei?
I usedto live in Jhong-li when I first came to Taiwan. I lived in 2 different apartments and I got those from simply walking around and when I saw a building I liked, my girlfriend, who is Taiwanese, would ask the security guard on duty if there were any vacant apartments. This worked for me 2 times and I think it is a good way for you to find a place as well.
Sorry but I don’t know where there are any places to go to find apartments to rent in certain cities. In the states, I would just buy the local paper but this doesn’t seem to be the way things are done here. (I have been in Taiwan about 3 years).
Good luck in your search and good luck finding a job.

The usual method of renting out a house or appartment here is by putting up a notice on a neighourhood notice-board which you can easily identify by the color of the ads hung up there: mostly on red paper. When you wander around a residential area you should happen upon one of those sooner or later. I got my first place like this when I came here as a student some 15 years ago, but I know it still works this way - or you can go and pay an agent of course … takes some basic Chinese ability though.
Don’t worry there is a fairly large contingent of foreigners living in Chungli…
Housing is cheap as well. What kind of a place are you looking for. Something in town or out in the burbs?
Newish place with 3 bedrooms/2 baths/decent security will run you 8-10,000NT a month. It’s cheap as hell compared to Taipei. If you’re looking for a one-bedroom or a studio you can find something for between 5-7,000NT a month.
PM me for more details…I lived in Chungli for many years and have lots of friends there. We’ll get you sussed out!
