How best to determine if your building is on fire?

They’ve been testing the alarms all day. It just started going off about 5 minutes ago…

Check to see if your neighbors are running out the door.

None as of yet

Can you smell smoke? Fire engines outside?

Fire engines don’t have a smell.

A fire engine did stop by, I think one of the firemen took an axe to the alarm so we could all get to bed.

All is well.

Has a large collection of flammable electronics items been stored at the bottom of the building’s central well, ready to turn it into a scorching furnace with flames shooting out of the top of the building if it should inevitably ignite?

Clearly the most accurate way to determine if your building is on fire is to place an open bag of dried corn on a table in the middle of the room.

Once the corn pops and starts flying all around the room, you can be certain that your building is indeed turning into a hot deathtrap that you will never escape from (as the stairwells in Taiwanese buildings are full of trash, clutter and bicycles that have not seen the light of day since Chiang Kai-Shek arrived on the island).

But at least you’ll get to enjoy your last moments with fresh popcorn and hopefully a cold beer.

If this is relatable, your building is on fire.

Or keep a canary for this purpose. When it falls off its perch, check for any gas leaks. If no gas leaks there may be a fire. If gas leaks, check for fire just in case.
