I’m curious about the event surrounding the decision to choose Taiwan over any other place as somewhere to either go on a trip, or to move to for a new home.
For clarity, I’m not interested in the reasons, but the circumstances in which the decision was made.
For me, I was in a period of an unreliable sleep cycle. I decided to go into work at 5:30am having spent all night in bed with racing thoughts. It was a starry night. I had never used or been on AirBnB before, but I decided to have a browse. I came across a listing, it wasn’t in English but it had the below cushion in one of the photos.
At that point, I was sold. I asked for some extended leave from work, booked this place, booked the flights and then basically forgot about it until boarding the flight.
I knew nothing about Taiwan or Taipei or even where the place was that I had booked before I arrived in Taiwan. No regrets.
I was running out of money and living in Nepal. I met a woman on a trail that spoke of treasure for the taking and easy employment. I wanted to save money to return to India the following year for the Maha Khumb Mela. Missed the festival but stayed in Taiwan for seven years
My jet fighter (kiwi Air Force) developed engine trouble over the South China Sea. I jettisoned and was picked up by the Chinese. Three years in solitary but I eventually escaped and made my way to Macau disguised as an avocado salesman. Stowed away on the old Macau Kaohsiung ferry. Sold heroin and cheap speed for several years in Taipei out of the old Night Owls diner. Did a seven stretch in Sanxia then got deported. Changed my name and came back, this time as a kiwi fruit salesman. The rest as they say is history.
All hail the Macmosa! Don’t want to cast doubt on the veracity of the rest of the story (cough) but took it a couple of times coming back from the HK visa run. Nice trip- IIRC it left in the afternoon, arrived next morning.
I was on my way to Japan, coming from South America via Europe, I had a flight connection of 5 hours here in Taipei, I felt very tired and decided to stay for 10 years here to take a rest. I will probably stay 5 more years and finally get to Tokyo, not sure if I can use the same ticket, though.
I wanted to have an international working experience about 12 years ago, and could go either Singapore or come to Taiwan. Both job opportunities were similar, so I went to check google images on both places.
Singapore results:
-Buildings
-Charts and reports
-Financial market
