I’m arriving in Taipei early friday and am ready to live over here.
I wonder how do I go about looking for a job? It sounds like there are a lot in Taipei but I wonder how do I find them and if there are better ones or better areas to start with.
This should be fun. I just hope finding a job isn’t too difficult.
You’ll have to find an Internet cafe to do web searches. There are many jobs posted on www.daveseslcafe.com. There are so many schools, you might be able to just walk around and go knock on doors, too.
If you want training, the larger chains like Kojen and Hess offer training. Try a Google search on those names to get their websites.
Put on a cleanish shirt, and a tie. Brush your hair. Make copies of your resume. And go and knock on doors.
I tried it the tealit way, and i didn’t get very far. Very often my replies were ignored, and when they weren’t the process took ages. It can be very demoralising. One day i was pissed off with the whole thing and went round schools waving my certs and resumes, and came home with all the work i needed.
I think that for a large propotion of teachers out here, the whole thing is a bit of a game. I saw one guy come to an interview wearing a bandana. If you are serious about it, and you show it, it will not be hard.
(Of course, if you are happy doing childcare, look on tealit. And you can wear your bandana if you want.)
Finding a job in Taiwan is fairly easy but in Taipei it maybe more difficult. I don’t know as I’ve never lived there. If you are willing to travel and live outside the big city you will have a job in next to no time. Personally I came back and used a recruiter, the China Post and websites and found a job though the newspaper. Recruiters can be both good and bad and it may take a while to find a job you like. Just remember most of the schools here need you more than you need them.
I’m not sure about the whole resume thing as that works well in the west but here it is often practice that will get you employment as you may be required to give a demo.
As for the shirt and tie, I would say that really depends on you but look presentable when turning up for a job. Later you may find yourself slipping inot casual dress after observing how your Chinese co-workers dress.
