How do I get a stall in a night market?

I want to set up a stall in a night market, after I get married.

  1. Do I have to register this with anybody? If so who do I talk to?

  2. How much would the rent be on a spot?

  3. How do you go about getting powewr without using a generator?

Basically you have to know someone within the system - then you have to wait for a space to come up - its all supply and demand. The rents are hideous so be prepared - what do you want to sell? My friend has a spot at one of the local night markets in TPE, to give you an idea its about 2mx2m and he pays NT55k/mth - Yep!

My friend has a roti stall at Bitan. Rent is NT$8,000 per month, which includes a lock-up behind him where he stores his stuff during the day. There are some “official” restrictions, such as, you’re supposed to be registered as a low-income family, but of course there are all kinds of ways around that.

You can ask the already established “brick and motar” store if you can rent the space that isn’t already on the road. There is a corner one by shi da that sells their front space for 25000nt a month. I guess they would get power for the store they sublet the space from.

The stalls in the shi-da market are actually illegal and protests by tenants that live near by to tear it down are met with kmt councillior (sp) influence when the police want to shut it down.

Make sure you are legal and you run a clean shop. You may get shut down by the Environmental protection agency if enough tenants nearby complain.

I’ve talked to Athula about it before. He says it’s pretty easy as long as you’re married. I’ve worked out which night market I want to be at and I just need to find suppliers and buy the equipment. Does Costco have an English language service in Taiwan?

Thanks, Sticks of Fury. That was what I was planning on doing. I know exactly where I want to be and now it’s a matter of getting it looking as legal as possible and finding a spot.

Digua, be prepared to pay two types of squeeze money, one to the police, since most market stalls are illegal, in fact, in Taipei, I think that most markets are illegal, and one to the mafia. Usually in most markets stall holders get together and make an envelope for the police and the mafia. The market leader is usually responsible for entertaining the police and mafia and keeping aware of their needs and desires. If you find an item that sells enough and you make enough money then all of the expenses are worth it. An old family friend used to have a couple of tofu stands in Yung-ho back when I was a kid, she could gross NT$30,000 a night on each stand. I think rent for the space was NT$28,000 a month, but I am not sure how much

I had a talk with the FAP for the city in the county where I will set up. He said it was ok as long as I was married(got that taken care of). Now I just need to get ahold of suppliers and work out finding a spot. Thanks for the help

How would you go about finding a spot? Would you just go directly to the store that has space or ask the local Lizhang?
