Yea I fucking hate e scooters, worse than scooters because you can’t hear them coming and they move super fast on the sidewalks. I imagine a lot of assaults happen over this shit.
Anything else I want to say about people who ride them is going to get me moderated so I won’t say it. Let’s just say it’s not necessarily taiwanese on these scooters.
Another pedestrian in Taipei almost hit by a scooter. The cammer reported the incident but the report was denied, no fine was issued. Scooter turned to avoid last second, seems like the pedestrian was centimeters away from getting hit, especially if he didn’t move his foot at the very last moment.
Seemingly because the scooter passed from the pedestrians back side…similar case has happened before where police have refused to issue fines in such instances even when cars come within centimeters of running over a mother and her baby stroller. I shared it somewhere in this thread last year if I remember correctly.
Well the scooter technically yielded to the pedestrian so you can’t slap a “did not yield” fine on him, but aren’t there laws against riding within centimeters of a pedestrian?
I know they’re supposed to keep a one-meter distance from the edge of the road or parked vehicles. Does that also apply to pedestrians and vehicles in motion?
What about “dangerous/reckless driving”? Is that an offense that can be fined?
It’s supposed to be 3 meters distance from pedestrians when yielding. I think the police interpret it as only being in front of the pedestrian so they ignore the behind part.
For obvious reasons that’s dumb as hell.
As for the reckless driving…with how terrible so many drivers are here I’m not even sure if that is a fineable offense.
I believe there is some point system in place, however, from what I recall someone on the Taiwan sub-reddit mentioned points can only be accrued from fines issued by police officers, not from reports from the public or cameras.
Government seems to be too afraid of issuing fines, hence people confident that they can safely ignore traffic rules.
Until they change this this reckless driving and pedestrian hell is going to continue.
Sometimes I think they need to become more authoritarian over this. Taiwanese had no problem following top down rules given CECC, so they shouldn’t be so afraid to issue fines.
This streamer encountered this. Quite embarrassing. Also apparently some creep found her and brought her cakes in a park- then tried to convince her to come home with him, saying he already bought a cab and all that.
edit: oops I guess I missed this already posted upthread
I say this all the time. You need to look at the progress, not just at one point in time. If you look back a few years, a few decades, you will see that there have been huge improvements in the overall traffic environment, including side walks, zebra crossings, etc. At least in Taipei, can’t speak for the situation in the small towns down south.
It takes time. You cannot expect to have everyone adapt to new rules and regulations the day they are introduced. Could it be better? Sure, it could always be better, even in your own country. It’s always easy to criticize others.
I see a lot of pedestrians doing stupid shit all the time. One typical move is pressing the button of a blinking traffic light [that allows them to cross the street] to “speed up” the changing of the light, then getting impatient and walking across the street anyway while the light is now a firm red for them [not allowing them to cross the road].
Always do your own part to make the situation better.
Have there been new rules and regulations? I believe the major issues of not giving way to people on pedestrian crossings, riding scooters on sidewalks and breaking red lights have always been illegal, just not (properly) enforced. If real change is expected then a major overhaul of learner driver education and the associated driving test needs to happen. Increasing fines and temporary police attention are just papering over the large cracks.
Things have definitely improved in the last 20 years, at least in the north, probably mostly in the last 5 but are still a long, long way from where they need to be. The next push needs to address the core of the issue but I don’t see the political will to take on the current big business of driving “schools”.
Scooter scourge unfortunately. Stick a camera on it and fund it using the traffic fines issued for riding on a sidewalk rather than further inconveniencing pedestrians.
Deficient design, education and enforcement aside, seems entitlement is a common element, cutting across road user class. How and will the government and society deal with entitled ****s on the road?
I do recall a politician saying once, in Taiwan Traffic has a 4th ‘E’ to improve on as well. So the usual Engineering, Education, Enforcement, but an added Empathy for Taiwan’s current situation.
Can’t say I really disagree when I see people from my own neighborhood who I regularly have small talk with and enjoy some short conversations with then proceed to get in their car and nearly run me over on a near weekly basis…near daily if you count them coming in/out of the underground parking.
