Well, when a Mommy pole loves a Daddy pole…
Pretty sure that’s impossible and you’d be dead.
Had an Uber Eats scooter slowly back up into me on the sidewalk next to a MRT station in Taichung. Why is it so hard to look and turn your head and make sure you’re clear to back up.
I’m fine but I hope by backing up to into me it fucked up the food in his bag.
This happens to me a lot and they never apologize, so I’ve taken to saying “be careful” to them just to make sure they understand that they’re at fault.
You’re nicer than me. I’ve had enough of this… Unfortunately my patience has largely run out…even then I’m normally a much more patient and timid/quiet person.
Well they never run me over. Just a small bump or close calls.
Maybe it is a medical condition? a.k.a stiff-necked

Over the past week, I actually witnessed two instances where a vehicle almost hit a pedestrian.
First was a bunch of scooters turning right (myself included). All the other drivers were crowding the crosswalk trying to force their way through. One scooter driver almost hit a pedestrian because she was next to another pedestrian walking the other direction. So, basically, she almost got hit because the scooter driver either doesn’t have the mental capacity to comprehend blind spots or because she was too much of a hurry to consider waiting for a human-sized blind spot to go away. Poor woman was frightened, visibly flinched, and threw up her hands to protect herself.
Second was on a small road, one with many pedestrians and no sidewalks, lots of double parked cars for people to pick up food. An SUV blows through a red light because they either didn’t see it or ignored it, almost hitting a young woman, possibly a high school student, crossing the street. The woman had to run and jump out of the way in order to not get hit.
In both cases, the pedestrians were legally crossing in crosswalks. Very messed up how drivers here just don’t give enough shits to pay attention.
Some drivers don’t care…some don’t look…well, because they don’t care.
Heck, today I saw a guy on a motorcycle pull out of an alley to cross a larger road and he never looked left or straight ahead…his head was turned right looking at whatever but totally focussed on something to his right. Well, I was driving and to his right but I slowed down so as not to hit him…but I note he was not looking at my car. Luckily the motorcycle to his left swerved to miss him.
Similar thing happened to me on Monday.
Old guy on a scooter was parked in a small space behind a car. Was sitting on his scooter and pushed himself into the road backing up without looking. I just came to a stop waiting for a red light and pushed the horn when I saw him. He still bumped into the side of my car. There was no visible damage and I had to go to work, so I let it slide.
If he would have done the same thing a few seconds earlier, he would have backed out right in front of my car from behind a parked car and there would be no time for me to react.
Suicidal old Taiwanese who never learned to drive properly.
Same facepalming stuff with my FIL too. He was driving an eScooter <25km/h. He needed to turn left. Of course he just does the asian left turn, going across four lanes of busy road without looking and not using the left-turn-box. He did not make it out of the scooter lane. Hit a guy going straight and both fell down. Everyone got away with some abrasions and light damage to the scooters. That will cost him 25k after we negotiated down from 45k. Since it is obviously his fault no mediation meeting needed. Unfortunately also still did not get the eScooter registered with a license plate and mandatory insurance. It is still transition period for that until next year. All cost will be out of pocket.
Obviously he will never hear the end of it from MIL.
Expensive and painful lesson not to drive ignorant Taiwanese way for FIL. Not his first rodeo…
Basically what he did but on a scooter:
Usain Chen can cross it twice, three if training.
Just got back from a multi-day hike up in the mountains. As soon I get back into the major cities the first intersection I cross (a very small one only two lanes wide) a car almost hits my and doesn’t yield to me at a crosswalk…then as I’m crossing a lady on a scooter doesn’t yield to me. This all happened in front of a police officer who was also waiting at the intersection.
They did nothing.
Oh wait, they then almost drove right fucking into me and only stopped less than a damn meter away from running me over. Too bad my phone was dead…
So ridiculous.
An elementary school in Taitung teaches kids to wave at drivers when crossing the street then bow to the drivers afterward to thank them for yielding… ![]()
And they still blur all the license plates of illegally parked vehicles… ![]()
Yea in the states they would basically push illegally parked vehicles out of the way if it’s an emergency, or basically mess up the car if it was parked by a fire hydrant.
Exactly, thats what we used to do, bump them out of the way (water may have also been involved sometimes
).
Yea I would say reinforce the heck out of ambulances and if an illegally parked car is in the way, they are free to push them out of the way.
By the way when they do road resurfacing work in Taiwan (this work is extremely time sensitive, a road is resurfaced literally overnight with a huge army of construction equipment), if some car is still parked there forklifts are used to move them out of the way.
Damage to expensive BMW or Mercedes? Sorry they were warned for weeks leading up to the work, so if they don’t move the car, they will move it for them.
