How do we make drivers yield to pedestrians at crosswalks?

This also shows that while yes, the politicians here are basically useless, the locals are just as much to blame. Blocking any kind of positive change with their outdated retarded opinions when it comes to improving a street/neighborhood.
Who in their right mind would block a proposal to build a proper sidewalk?

How can we expect politicians to change much when citizens are blocking and complaining about every proposal that would lead to improvement?

Meh, I’m regularly dodging pedestians who shouldn’t be in the road, scooters are all over the place. I really don’t think car drivers are the worst. Among the most dangerous and take up the most space, but the attitude is not limited to them

Pedestrians staring at their phones or playing video games while blocking stairs in the MRT system—yes also all annoying.

Car owners (not all of them for sure, but a notable percentage of them) have a Big Man approach to life that is at least for me particularly risible. Kudos to you if you have more patience with these people.

But not dangerous or illegal, i mean the ones that enter moving traffic at their convenience instead of walking 20m and waiting for the light to change

I just see it with the way everyone moves through the world here. How often do people hold the door for you, or make space on an escalator?

I cannot comment on legality but I can assure you that these twits can certainly be dangerous when they decide to stop and send an urgent Line message (or some other business on their phone) at the bottom of an escalator in the MRT system as people are pouring down . . .

Still better than walking into moving traffic without looking first

Someone did this to me recently. I was shocked!

It is illegal actually. Usually don’t hear about it too often though except sometimes on rainy days when people are all crowding around at a MRT station exit blocking people who are coming up on the escalator and making it dangerous.

In accordance with the Mass Rapid Transit act you can’t stay and block station entrances/exist, ticket gates, ticket machines, escalators or obstruct people. Failure to comply with requests to leave can result in a fine of up to 7,500NTD.

EDIT: English version from MOJ website.
Mass Rapid Transit Act - Article Content - Laws & Regulations Database of The Republic of China (Taiwan). Fine will be 1,500 to 7,500NTD.

(10)Hindering other passengers from passing through or using station entrances/exits, ticket-reading gates, ticket vending machines, escalators or other passages, and disregarding the requests to leave.

十、滯留於車站出入口、驗票閘門、售票機、電扶梯或其他通道,致妨礙旅客通行或使用,不聽勸離。

So . . . dangerous AND illegal, for @TT 's reference.

And not just car drivers

To add a bit more information about the 38yr. old Police Chief, Liu Zongxin (劉宗鑫), who was killed by the driver on drugs yesterday in New Taipei.

He had been an officer for 10 years. He became an officer to follow in his father’s footsteps. He leaves behind a wife and two children. One child is 4yrs. old and the other is 1yr. old.

He also performed very well in traffic enforcement.

Since it’s a typhoon day you can park pretty much anywhere, even red lines if the road is at least 15m wide (of course not including crosswalks)…which is a lot of roads yet somehow tons of people are still illegally parking on crosswalks, parked facing against traffic and police cars still drive by like nothing is wrong.

This is in Taichung…it’s basically just a windy day so nothing really going on…

EDIT: Here’s a picture my friend sent me. He said police drove by without a care in the world. He also saw 2 older pedestrians have to slowly step down into the road to cross and putting themselves in a blind spot because of the illegally parked vehicle.

My road is mostly empty and cars are going like 100 km/h. I saw on the news some car crash in Taipei

In Miaoli a road is getting sidewalks. Someone posts online to a Miaoli community Facebook group to complain about it saying the slow lane is being removed and there are some peeople commenting to complain as well… but many other people in the comments clarify that at this spot there was never a slow lane…it’s 15cm so the actually traffic lane hasn’t been touched at all and the sidewalk is being made using space from shoulder space. Also some people complaining about the sidewalk being too wide

Even in one of the photos the person complaining about posts it can clearly be seen up close that it is a 15cm line indicating it is the shoulder off to the side…

I feel them. Their zigzag blocking technique won’t be as effective as it is now.

Just wait until people see the potential of this “sidewalk” as a brand new parking area!

Driver ran a red light, looking at cellphone, turning left too early, and not giving me much space when crossing the street (pedestrians get a few seconds head start to cross). Technically failed to yield to pedestrian by “police standards” (3m front and back).

Yeah…so when are things supposed to get better?

Another pedestrian hit crossing the street by left turning driver.

Sme more bus news. Mostly from Taichung, you know just a week or two after a bus killed a student in Taichung…again. Stuff like illegal turns, not using turn signals, driving in incoming traffic lane, crossing double yellows, and getting stopped by police.

This one was next to the train station, so close by where the student was hit and killed. Bus turns without using his turn signal. When questioned by the police officer about the bus companies having promoted safer driving the driver responded promote what?

Taichung bus drivers into oncoming traffic lane.

Clips of Taichung buses making illegal left turns and running a red light.

In Changhua a bus driver uses PA system to tell everyone to stop illegally parking and blocking the bus otherwise he will call the police. The bus company said it’s not that good for their driver to use the PA system like this…wtf support your drivers. You guys are the ones getting screwed over by all these people illegally parking. Seriously the local govts. are absolutely screwing over the bus drivers and bus companies by not doing anything to deal with all this illegal parking.

Now that it’s in the news the police say the usual they will increase enforcement on that street. Yeah that one street.

In other news a bus rear ended a car…and it turns out the bus company doesn’t have 3rd party insurance…the accident rate is too high so they weren’t able to get insurance. As it turns out 3rd party insurance isn’t required by the govt. for the bus companies but many people were shocked by the company not being able to get insurance.

What a mess.

The first step would be basic enforcement. But where’s the political will? It seems to be missing in action.

Just use video from bus cam to fine cars parking in bus stops. Is this really that difficult? I bet if a even just one cop rode busses for one month giving out tickets at bus stops we would see less offenders.
