How does ETC work exactly?

Hi guys,

Today I was driving back from Taipei to Taichung and I stopped by at a service area, it has attract my attention that ETC was there, so I bought it.

The clerk has put a sticky stripe (probably e-tag) on cars headlight.

Anyway, I started to drive and went through the ETC booth, but I am not sure did it really work or not.

My speed was around 70 while entering, the camera also took my picture (probably a fine is on the way)

What my question is; what my speed should be in order to sensors see my etag on the headlights? Is it possible that the sensors could not dedect my etag with 70kms/h?

I expect responses from drivers, who have been using this ETC thing and know about it.

Cheers.

You can download the App for Android or iPhone, or simply lookk it up online to see if the payment went through.
apps
fetc.net.tw/externalFETC/eTa … l#/check_2
online
css.fetc.net.tw/cws/FETCvtpAcct … MenuId=510

The catch is the balance will only be updated 2 days after you drove through an ETC.

The new eTag work in two ways, 1st your RF tag is suppose to get picked up when you pass through, which will be linked to your account. 2nd, if for some reason the tag isn’t picked up by sensors, there is a camera system that will take photos of your license plate. The idea is that even those without ETC could technically pass through the eTag lane. The bill will simply be sent to their registered address. For older ETC users they have a box called OBU.

@hansioux,

Thank you for the reply.

I hope that photo is not a fine, if it is then it is gonna be 2nd fine in a week because of my stupidity.

I have installed the app and I get a screen something like this, but I dont understand exactly what does it state there.

Cheers.

It states that you had 500NT on the E-Tag charged and 40NT were deducted.
Which is kinda odd, cause it deducts for me only 36NT when I pass a toll booth (maybe cause I was one of the early adopters)
I think u have to make sure also, that you could use the e-tag right away, when I applied for it, it was told to me, I have to wait 2 days until I can use it.

During a recent road trip, I noticed that in between all intersections there are ETC gantries spanning the highway, monitoring cars as they pass. This is in addition to the regular ETC toll stations. Are we paying per km now instead of per toll station?

Per km ETC coming soon in August. Tear down those darn toll booths!

As I was passing under the gantries the purple light detector thingies were registering me, and all the other cars too. It’s possible they are conducting system checks before the launch. I’ll have to download the app, previously posted in this thread, and check my billing.

Another ponderous question. Is it possible that this new system will monitor average speed between gantries? My GPS shows them as speed cameras, not toll stations. I’m pretty good at hovering around the 119.8km/hr mark, but can’t guarantee that I won’t budge over this a bit between gantries.
I wonder if other countries use similar systems for average speed checks.

It could be used for average sped cameras but this won’t be adopted in Taiwan for a long time, if ever. It would be seen as unfair by the local populace.

I know that Spain is doing this, measuring the time between the gantries you need and calculate your average speed. If it is significantly over the speed limit, they will issue a ticket

what’s the point of driving on the “freeway”, if you aren’t really free to drive the way you want…

if they do that, they should approve google car at the same time, because I’ll then turn over driving on freeways to my google car robot, while I ask it to google for porn (wait… how do I strike that)

This is ridiculous complaint or poor sarcasm.

it’s a ridiculous complaint. I can’t wait for the day when KITT would drive me around and wake me up when I get there.

You completely don’t understand the concept of a freeway. It certainly isn’t free of rules as you believe. There is a reason for speed limits. Whether or not this is the best way to enforce that is another matter but the current system is kind of a joke. Anyone with a GPS gets a warning before they go through a speed camera.
