Both of my Dad’s parents were Taiwanese citizens when my Dad was born. His mother is still alive and still holds a Taiwanese passport.
If I understood the citizenship requirements properly, my father should be eligible to apply for citizenship, right? If so, how would he go about starting this process.
Additionally, I am curious whether or not it’s possible for me to ultimately gain citizenship through my father. My father was clearly not a citizen at the time of my birth, but if he becomes a citizen is it possible for me to gain my citizenship as well?
if she has not visited Taiwan for more that 2 years, her hukou/household registry(HHR) must be deactivated/moved out. She should reactivate/move in her HHR. Then your father can get a TARC via his mother’s HHR. after 1 year of continuous residency in Taiwan, he can establish his HHR (citizenship).
Iirc, you can also get TARC via your grandmother’ s HHR.
Both of your father and you have Taiwanese nationality.
First thing you should do is to get a Taiwanese passport. For this step, your grandmother’s hukou doesn’t need to be reactivated. Your father may get his passport, then you can get yours.
For TARC, her hukou should be reactivated. She may need to renew her passport and should visit Taiwan on her Taiwanese passport and do some paperwork at HHR office.
This is awesome!! Thank you so much for the information.
I think I may have misspoke in my initial post: the goal is to get the Taiwanese passport–I hadn’t realized that this may be somehow separate from full citizenship.
Would it be possible to point me to where my father can start the process of applying for his Taiwanese passport?
it is almost the same with the procedure for newborn. An instruction in English from TECO in Chicago is linked below. You may contact to TECO in your area for more details.
The essential documents are some proof of parent’s ROC nationality (passport, hukou, national ID card etc ) and applicant’s birth certificate.
