How does one enjoy fruit?

I’m not kidding. I KNOW that a few servings of fruit a day are beneficial to a healthy diet and all, and I even like the taste of it, mostly, but for some reason I feel that my body rejects it. I get upset stomach, bad breath, and occasionally break out in hives. It just sits there, and my body does not know what to do with it.

I’ve been so bad lately that I even wrinkle my nose and dry heave at the thought of eating fruit.

When I was younger, and biking 500 k’s a week, and doing lots of strenuous work and such, I would force myself to choke down a “power shake” every morning containing a banana, yogurt, fresh berries, whatever other fruit availiable, and bee pollen, wheat germ, whatever, a raw egg. I was very annoying.

Now I don’t get enough exercise, I have a slow metabolism, and I’m hoping a better diet will improve things.

I eat several servings of dark green veggies every day, as well as meat and usually some sort of starch, like rice, noodles or potatoes. I often skip the starch. I don’t do vitamins. They make me crazy. Vitamin C alone will give me canker sores the size of pennies if I take it for more than a few days.

People are giving me fruit all the time and I can’t eat it. Why?

For the record I could hardly eat it even when I gad a girlfriend that made me go vegetarian for 18 months.

I’ve never seen a doctor or a nutritionalist about this, but I like to hear a few opinions before I go to a doctor.

I dunno.

I’ve never been much of a fruit lover. Except for apples and bananas, I don’t really enjoy eating fruit. Most fruit is too sour or bitter for my tastes, or it’s filled with pesky seeds, and it gets my hands all messy. It’s usually an ordeal for me to eat it.

But I know fruit’s good for me, so when someone gives me fruit or pushes me to eat it, or when I decide I should eat it myself, I just chop it up, toss it in the blender, add some fruit juice and make a shake. After a few quick gulps, the ordeal is over, and my body has been replenished with vitamins and minerals.

You could try juice and smoothies. You should take is slow in the beginning or those extra calories will fatten you up. You should eat several servings (6-8 meals a day). That will increase you metabolism. You can also lift weights in the morning and run at night.

I use a high speed blender to make juice. Sometimes I get carried away, put too many different fruits in, and it comes out a strange looking color. I use honey as a sweetner, and most of the time it tastes pretty good. I’m still experimenting so there are a few notable exceptions. The biggest challenge is to keep the vodka out of these concoctions!

Your metabolism changes. You’ll have to take it slow to adjust your body to fruit. I used to eat fruit almost every day but I stopped eating fruit for about a couple of years, apart from bananas and orange juice. The other day I ate a peach for breakfast and my guts started churning. I had diarrhea the rest of the morning. It’s funny how changes in diet can affect your system.

It’s possible that you have an allergy to certain kinds of fruit. My body completely rejects mangos, kiwis, papayas, etc. If fruit is something that you really want to include in your diet, try as many different varieties as possible and see if they cause the same problem. I can only eat the boring, mainstream stuff, like apples, bananas and oranges… berries too. I love berries.

berries and pineapple are good for your metabolism. Bananas provide such a high glycemic spike they might not be the best for increasing your met. rate over an extended period of time.

First things first, you don’t need nearly as much fruit in your diet as you do vegetables. While fruit does have many benefits it is also very high in sugar, so if you eat a ton of vegetables you should be okay. Second, are there any other foods you have problems consuming? You may have a sensitive stomach or intestine which some foods will play havick with. The third possibility is that you have developed an aversion to fruit for some reason. This can come about by getting really ill after eating a certain food or by associating that food with something else you find disgusting. Another possibility can be very sensitive tastebuds. Some people have more tastebuds than others, especially on certain parts of their tongues. This can make something that tastes good to a normal person taste very bitter to a sensitive tongue, or very sweet or salty. You get the picture. Try to figure out if your dislike is a matter of taste or simply how your body feels as you digest it. If you really can’t stand fruit make sure to take a multivite to get all your nutrients and vitamins that you might be missing by not eating fruit. Also make sure it is not an allergy, if it is and your forcing yourself to eat fruit you could actually be doing damage to your body. Thats why we feel pain, to warn us that something is dangerous or not quite right.
