I believe that gender is a social construct I don’t understand why some people are so obsessed with the notion that some people do not identify the same way as they do as if it was personal.

I believe there are aspects to gender that are social constructs, but not enough to make gender a spectrum. That’s what this thread is about - a discussion on gender. As always I’m not 100% certain in my belief and could be persuaded otherwise if persuasive arguments are provided.

Which posters do you think are taking things personally?

And it doesn’t make a lot of sense. There are some real contradictions. Like being trans is not a choice, you’re born that way. Or is gender fluid and you can choose?

For me the key contradiction is if gender is a social construct then how can people innately feel that they have been wrongly assigned gender at birth? Gender can’t be 100% a social construct and innate.

Also, if gender is a spectrum then there are around 7.5 billion genders. Personality would be a better description.

Exactly, it’s pointless if there are unlimited amounts of genders. There’s no use for it if that’s the case. No one can possibly know what another person identifies as.

For the first case (in Ontario), there’s a link to a previous blog post that in turn contains a link to a report in a mainstream newspaper. Okay.

For the second case (in BC), there’s just a link to two blog posts, one of which quotes what looks like a genuine report but neither names nor links a source, while the other (written by a lawyer from the organization representing the estheticians in question) is also a dead end. What happened to your dislike for unattributed quotations, Andrew?

One of the estheticians, a single mom who works out of her home, already paid J.Y. $2,500 to withdraw his complaint so she could simply get on with her life. Two and a half grand, it turns out, is the amount of money that a single mom, seeing her livelihood threatened, has to pay to a man for not touching his genitals.

In other words, they settled. People do that all the time, for various reasons. Ask the Donald.

It gets worse. According to John Carpay of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, many lawyers are terrified to touch transgender discrimination cases for fear of being accused of transphobia, thus making it very difficult for the women being targeted to find any legal representation and increasing the temptation to simply settle. To fight these attack to the hearing stage, Carpay noted, would cost each of these women over $20,000.

That’s an odd claim to make, considering that they’re already being represented for free.

Lawyers at the Calgary-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) announced Wednesday they are representing Poyer.

The JCCF is also representing Poyer’s boyfriend, Jeremy Paradis, who is accused in the complaint of sending harassing and threatening messages to the complainant. However, according to text messages provided to the tribunal, Paradis accused the complainant of being the harasser.

So yeah, the ladies (and at least one of their +1’s) already have free lawyers, but they’re still somehow oppressed by the cost of defending themselves. If someone attacked me with a completely hopeless case, I wouldn’t even hire a lawyer. I would just show up at the hearing.

(We don’t know all the facts, obviously. If there’s an important part of the story that’s missing, then maybe the complainant does have a case after all.)

I’ve noticed gay women seem to be incredibly specific about their preferences. I suspect that back in the day they were all just lumped together as “maiden aunts”, which surely amounts to the same thing: the chances of getting laid must be virtually zero.

M stands for Male (M : männlich)
F stands for Female (W: weiblich)
D stands for Diverse (D: divers)

Of course this would still offend some people because their preferred gender pigeon-holed as either of these three genders.
