I want to know if I go find a foreign teacher for English lesson, how much would they chagre is reasonable?
Thanks!

500-1500 an hour depending on your needs, the travelling time and the teacher’s qualifications and experience.

Thanks!

Who will prepar the material?Should I or teacher?

What she said. I charged $1000 when I was still accepting private students, the same as my editing rate per hour. But like Buttercup said, it depends on distance, teacher experience, and so on.

I charge NT$8,000 per half-hour session. Haven’t had a student in nearly 18 years. Life is good.

WOW. as much as 1500 an hour? I presume the teacher provides cookies and tea for that price no?
I heard that the average is 600 per hour?

Talk about it with the teacher. If you just work through a book or chat in a coffee shop, you should pay less. If you want to buy a book, ask your teacher to help you choose something appropriate. You should also get a copy for her so she can prepare for your class.

If the teacher designs an individualised program for you, based around your needs and interests, you should expect to pay more but the teacher will probably use her own materials either in place of, or to supplement your book.

Think about what your goals are and what you hope to achieve and talk to the teacher about this. With clear goals, it’s easier to see whether you are progressing or not.

Good luck.

Why not look on myu.com.tw to see what people charge?

If you’re paying a lot it’s fair to expect the teacher to provide material. If you’re not paying much, well why is the guy willing to accept so little? Probably not giving you a lot for your investment.

Thanks.
I plan to prove my speaking and listening ability first.
And I may buy book based on teachers suggestion.
If we chat in coffee shop, should I pay it?

I have viewd this site.It has quite different charge there.
I dont care how much I should pay.I just hope what I paid is worth.

douseeme,
Be careful not to make the mistake of thinking that the more expensive teachers are better. For example, I charge about NT$650 an hour. I provide the materials (sometimes write them myself) and I also mark students’ writing outside of class. I’ve been teaching for more than ten years.
Anyway, my point is to shop around. You can find a good teacher for a good price.

I charge NT$5,000, but no kissing on the lips.

$1500 is for specialized classes from highly qualified teachers. If you want to learn business English, go through terms in economics, and the teacher needs to put in a lot of serious work to prepare, then $1500 would be understandable for an exceptional teacher.

$600 is common for a simple conversation class where there is virtually no preparation needed, and you are just paying for a professional chat session where your mistakes get corrected and the teacher might focus on something you said wrong.

Teachers charging $1000/hour for a one-on-one session is pretty common if they prepare things in advance and are experienced.

ImProving my speaking and listening ability first is my plan.
I would prefer chat rather than go for some book.

Make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to talk about and why.

I find ‘free talk’ incredibly tedious. A lot of students sit there waiting for me to supply interesting things to talk about without having any ideas of their own about what is interesting. Movies are good for one class, but you need somethnig else for the next one. Make sure your teacher is able to talk about whatever you are interested in.

One of my friends used to run a regular ad at tealit which began “Are you tired of hearing Canadian college kids talk about themselves?” He got a lot of responses, which says a lot about what happens in many 1-1 classes. I’ve seen people sitting in coffee shops with expressions on their faces bordering on severe physical pain.

My favourite 1-1 at the moment is a girl who is planning to open a kids buxiban with a friend. Last week we talked about the long-term objectives of the students and parents, and the general educational environment in Taiwan. This week it was classroom management and motivation, next week it’s marketing and branding. This is fun for me and useful for her. She’s not just practising English, she’s broadening her understanding of what she’s getting into and explaining things to me gets them clear in her own mind. I charge NT$1000/hr for that, and although it may not be what you have in mind it illustrates the point.

You need a purpose to your conversations, and a teacher who can engage your interest.
