dont forget the tax component .
In the USA if you made 100,000 you are likely taking home 60,000 after Fed tax, state tax, social security tax, medicare tax. So 60,000 divided by 12 = 5000 USD/ month which is bout 150,000 NTD/ month. Then take into consideration that the USA is about one and a half times more expensive (all things considered, except for house buying) than Taiwan and you get 100,000ntd / month.
OF course if you live in rural USA, that 100k USD goes a lot further so it would be closer to making 150,000 Ntd/ month in say Taipei or Ktown.
IF you live in New York City or the Bay Area (two of the most expensive places in the USA) then for sure 100,000ntd/ month would more equate.
making 100k USD / annum in the Bay Area or NYC is NOT big money now.
Levi STrauss junior execs make 200,000 K or more a year now. Dentists are working 4 day weeks and making 350,000 or more. Young doctors who are specialists are pulling in 300,000 to 400,000 to even 500,000 per annum now.
I told you about this young accountant working for a Japanese major company . And his US salaray was 350,000 usd/ annum. They doubled it from his 180,000 usd/annum Japanese salary to take into account the “hardship” of a USA assignment for two years !!!
Making 100k / annum in the USA is NOT big money now if we want to talk big salaries.
You are still pretty poor if you live in the BAy ARea or NYC wiht that income.
You would need two people in the house making that money to BEGIN to have a nice home, take an annual vacation, send your kids to a private school.
Let me expand some more.
IF you take home 5000 a month. FIrst you need a place to live. And if you rent a two bedroom apt in a nice area but by no means centrally located. We are talking 1500 to 1800 a month (and believe me thats cheap). If you are paying a 30 year mortgage on the same kind of place in the same area you are talking about 2800 to 3200/month in mortgage.
So? If your take home is 5000. YOu CAnt buy a two bedroom condo. YOU can buy a one bedroom condo. Which even with prices being bout 60pct of what they were a few years ago you need to pay 300,000 to 400,000 for one. You may be able to get one for about 2000/month in mortgage. IF you cant afford that you can rent a one bedroom for about 1200 to 1600 /month in a nice area but , again not exactly CHOICE location.
So now say you take away 1500 from your 5000, you got 3500 dollars. Now you need a car. Without a car you have no way to make money. So you lease one for anywhere from 200 to 600 a month (honda civic to Audi A4). So now you got 3000 a month left. You will need food, and some entertainment. You will need to eat lunch at work. So your lunches are going to cost you bout 300 a month if you are not crazy . And you may want to eat some meals out. So add another 300 to 500 a month for those. So that doesnt leave you a lot. Because you most likely have bills (college bills to repay, credit cards, etc).
Dotn forget utitlity bills and GAS is going to cost you a few hundskis a month. And car insurance is going to cost you 100 to 150 /month for most people. And dont forget you need clothes, and shoes and other things during the year too. And pay off your bills for your furniture. And car repairs , etc etc etc. Theres never enough money for all the bills.
Now are are just talking for a single person here. IF you have a wife who is not pulling her own weight, you have to consider eating more at home.
And if you have kids. Forget going out aT ALL, except to a macdonalds now and then. And you have to tighten your belt a whole lot more
Because you may have school fees, And dont forget your company doesnt pay for your family insurance. Add 400 for a spouse and 800 for a family to your monthly costs.
So basicaly you can survive on 5000 net per month as a single person if you dont party it up. But for a family you are not far from starving. Of course you get more exemptions with a wife and a kid but those savings will very much be exceeded by the extra costs !
