How to ask for a pay rise at a Taiwanese company?

Totally agree . often times ultimatums are taken as threats. And threats are not often taken lightly.

Thinking reverse is always good, to consider the managers view. If you were the manager what could possibly convince you? I guess threats are not high on that list.

Never over estimate yourself as indispensable, my worse scenario through the years was a person two levels down whom approached me and claimed he needed a pay increase as he was like Messi/Ronaldo. He was good but definitely no Messi, more a Championship player LOL

All companies have salary structures, from small family businesses to top global 500 companies. Never worth to upset 10 people to please 1, fairness is critical to gain loyalty IMHO, so you need solid reasons and clear points to convince as your manager usually has an HR and a manager to convince in his/her turn

Well that’s a major impairment in negotiation. But you should go get some other offers anyway, because you might find that it changes how you feel about staying!

It’s definitely easier to get a big pay bump by changing jobs than by getting a raise. Which is dumb, but it’s how things work at most places these days.

I’ve got through to second round interviews at three companies this week, once I’ve got a couple offers I’d be willing to take, I’m gonna ask for a pay rise. If they say no I’ll jump ship to one of our competitors

True. Most people tends to overvalue themselves. Physical, intelligence, football skills. Most people think they have above average Mr. Peepee. They have above average intelligence or influence. They could play football better than the professional footballers that often doing stupid things each games.

Personally I think if you’re an integral part of your team, and if you think the market rate for your role is 10-15% higher than what you’re making now, get another offer and then negotiate with your current employer.

You have to make it sound convincing that you’ll leave and take the other offer. Mention rising costs and personal situation, and make it sound like you have no other option since the difference in numbers is too hard to ignore.

They’ll probably bargain a bit but you should get some raise.

Most people are not important for the company nowadays. Especially in the era of everyone making reports and having a meeting as a job. Your outcome are only reports that read by no one, and meeting that fill the gap between coffee breaks.

In my previous company, the employees, engineers and non-engineers treated equally. The big boss think them all as replaceable like Taiwanese with the available breakfast stores as an option. He won’t bat an eye to most people asking for raise or leaving company.

In other company, I know, threatening to leave the company, is a valid tactic to get a raise.

In wind turbine industry, the most difficult position to fill are the grunts on the field. The technicians that install and/maintain wind turbines. They are both physical and -albeit less often- intelligent works. They need to complete various safety and technical training. They are needed in bulk, but almost always available less than necessity.
However, the technicians would often chase better opportunities as site managers or technical supports that requires lesser time on field and have better salary.
On the opposite ends, the project managers, there are always more of them than necessity. They need to do PM training. Most of the time, their job is scheduling a meeting and cancel/delay them for another meeting, ad infinitum. Oh, also forwarding e-mail. They also have the best salary among the non-people controlling managers/specialists.

If that is how employees actually acted in a company, why wouldnt they be treated as nothing and undeserving of a raise? Or even basic respect…If they are just killing time, about time to be laid off. Charity is for non profits and governments. Even then, that level of entitlement is hard to stomach.

This is bad on all fronts in my opinion.
