I bought a switch from someone on Facebook. I want to make sure it is in working order before I pay for it. Is this possible and how should I proceed?
You can’t.
So I could open up my package to find a bunch of rocks and have no recourse?
There is an anti-fraud centre and you could go to the cops too. I am in the middle of one right now for a package fraudulently sent to me in my name for Chinese cosmetics which I’d never buy. Someone got ahold of my info.
Right now I am trying to get that $1500 back.
It would be chaos if they gave you this option. Too many people would refuse to pay for “as is” goods.
If I were you I will not pay since I didn’t order it, I will let it sit there and that package will be returned back to sender.
This happened to my brother and other friends - now they learned the lesson.
If buying electronics via Facebook (if just around Taipei) why not just meet up first and check it on spot. If far away just go to electronic shop and buy brand new.
If it was @ store and you got that doubt.
Decline to pay and that package will return back to sender.
Sender will get mad 100%.
Yes I know. But since I was waiting on several packages, I got caught up thinking this was one of them.
Somone stole my name and number and sent me a package of cheap Chinese cosmetics.
It’s not like you can check beforehand.
To collect a package you have to pay for it first. If the item does not work then you need to discuss with the seller. 7/11 is only a shipping agent they don’t get involved.
I told her I wanted to talk with her on the phone before I picked it up. She sent me a copy of her ID and said I could suit her if it was fraud. She refused to speak with me and now she wants $500 for a shipping fee.
There is always an inherent risk buying anything online especially Facebook…if you go through established platforms like Ruten, Shopee. Momo etc where funds are put in escrow, buyers at least have some sort of a window (usually a week) to return the goods if they’re deemed to be defective or incorrect. Using FB, buyers will always be on the “risky” side & hence the term “Buyer beware”. It is always recommended to meet the seller in person & complete the transaction.
As for the shipping fee, she can’t do anything to you if you refuse the package. She can just block you on FB hence avoid doing any future transactions with you or even warn others on her Friends list or group list not to sell to you.
Honestly, you should have thought of this before asking the seller to send you the item COD. If you really need the Switch, you can perhaps make some sort of a deal with her, like ask her to meet you in person, go to the 7-11 collect the item, test it and if it works, pay her the $500 for inconveniencing her…if it doesn’t work, then she can pay you back on the spot and take the item back.
Its always a gamble. especially on FB marketplace. Some advice is to check the profile of the person who is sending you. If its a real profile or not, sometimes it even show reviews and ratings. Make a video of you while opening the package first time. In the end there is still hope police can help although not a gaurantee. I got scammed once on fb marketplace and police did shit.
The best thing is to do face to face transaction for everything possible
Massive warning signs! No one would send a stranger a copy of their ID, with that there are many potential uses. It doesn’t cost anywhere close to 500NT to ship something through 7-11, should be less than 100 for the ship and return so either she’s genuine and really pissed or a scammer trying to threaten you into paying for the Switch.
It’s a pretty poor move to be questioning this now, if the seller is genuine they are justified in being pissed off with you. However if you suspect a scam just walk away, let 7-11 return the package to them.
Yes, it’s possible. Just ask the seller to meet up with you in person at a coffee shop. Inspect the merchandise, then hand over the cash if satisfied.
Never have used products shipped to you.
Just don’t pick it up, and the package will be returned to her for free after 10 days. She won’t have to pay. But why are you only questioning her now after you’ve already made her ship it? I’d be pissed.
I figured there had to be a way to inspect the product. “She” doesn’t seem legit. Her profile is suspect and she refuses to speak with me over the.phone. Lesson learned.
I take solace in the fact that my misfortune prevents others from being separated from their money.
Does it? What have we learned?
Probably REALLY frowned upon, but 711 doesn’t help you look for and collect the package. You need to get it yourself. Could give it an open there. Though that may be considered something something illegal mail something something.
I do cut the tape and open before paying COD to courtiers to my door. Mostly just to be sure things aren’t broken, in which case I don’t pay.
I think this probably applies only if you’re somewhere rural like you? It’s not like this in any of the convenience stores I’ve ever collected packages from in Taipei. The staff members always look for and collect the package (sometimes from a separate room, or at least a cabinet/area that customers aren’t supposed/allowed to go and root around in).
